well yeah, because you need a minimum amount to survive.
I'm more curious on the number of calories thing being consistent across all people.
again, I know nothing about this topic, so these are questions meant to educate myself, and not meant to doubt or debate you.
How big/small of a part does genetic play into the calorie equation?
Example:
all of the men on my dad's side of the family are very similar height and build (with 1 uncle being an extreme outlier).
there is maybe a 2" height difference between tallest and shortest of us.
and we all are very similar weight/build at similar ages to each other.
this is despite us being spread across 4 different states, with wildly different career fields, hobbies, etc. There is almost no way we all have the same diet.
so is that genetics or do the 9 of us all somehow coincidentally all mathematically end up with roughly the same calorie in/out end result at around same age ranges as each other?

ok so ill explain it to you
there are differences in metabolism and also big differences in the amount of non exercise activity people perform and how much muscle they carry so yea not everyone that is 6' 200lbs burns the same amount of calories
but we know from over 200 studies and atleast 2 dozen meta analysis that the only thing that determines overall weight gain and loss is calories in vs calories out
the calories out part is where some things can get complicated but its really not
in the end the only thing that matters with diet when it comes to bodyfat loss is simply amount of calories and amount of protien
it becomes pretty simple formula
1) use online calculator to get rough estimate of overall maintenance calories
2) subtract 250 calories and that is going to be your caloric intake for next 2 weeks
3) eat 1g protein for every lbs you weigh....i.e. a 200lbs person should eat 200g(prolly more than you need, but better to be safe while in a deficit plus diet induced thermogensis from actually processing protein)
4) weigh yourself every single day in the morning after you pee before you get dressed or eat/drink anything
5) get the 2 week rolling avg. if you didnt lose any weight while keep diet consistent, subtract 200 calories(keep protein the same) and repeat
simple and effective
only other things you need to is 3x per week lift weights heavy and progressively for about an hour following a proven plan. something like Kinobody, greyskull, PPSA, etc
walk as many steps as you can per day. start at like 5k per day and simply over time ramp it up
keto, Intermittent fasting, carnivore, high carb, zone, meditation, etc etc are all just strategies to stay consistent. Unless you are doing a Bodybuilding show or a photo shoot....nothing else matters. just strategies to stay consistent and none burn bodyfat any faster than the other
the only science is consistency and remembering that protein is the star of the show at all times.

I just got the report from my panel test yesterday and was taken back as to how I had let myself go.
While I had only gained a pound from my last appointment, I had let my triglycerides, glucose, and cholesterol get much further out of range than I like.
Starting this morning, I'm getting back to watching everything that goes into my body...type and quantity.

I'll never understand the people who act like basically anything below 200 lbs is skinny for someone in the 6'-6'6 range. Maybe it's just because us taller people can hold extra fat a bit better/it's a lot harder to get a protruding gut?
the NFL and NBA are full of 6'2-6'6 guys at or under 200 lbs. Even more under 215 or so.

I am assuming you’re talking about your build. And if you’re overweight, I assume you’re talking about where you store fat.
If you all store fat in the same place (genetic), and it is currently there, it means you all overconsume calories. It doesn’t mean your genetics make you overweight. It just means you all overeat. (I say that in the most respectful way.. not trying to be an arse)
Actions =\= natural genetics
It’s like when people talk about your metabolism slowing down when you get older. It slows down ever so slightly as we age, but not enough to matter. The real truth is that we move less as we age. When I was in college, I was walking Easily a few miles a day going across campus. I was waiting tables for six hours at a time, on my feet the entire time. Lifting heavy stuff when closing the restaurant. I ate and drank like garbage but my lifestyle kept me tiny.
It would be easy to say my metabolism slowed now that I’m older, but the truth is I sit on my arse all day working the job I have.

Yeah I don't get it. In general, muscle is more dense than fat. If there are pro athletes who are 20-30lbs lighter at the same height, with densely packed muscle, how are you a "skeleton" when I KNOW you have more fat on you? You don't look like a skeleton, you look like a water balloon.

correct i think the latest studies showed about a 10-25 calorie burn difference for every decade over 30 so.....less than 1 donut hole a day
i mean its so funny when my aunts always say....wait until you get older
i will say this applies even for post menopausal women....difference is, similar to men with very low testosterone, their energy levels drop tremendously and so their "NEAT" also falls greatly and boom...a sudden 10 lbs. got to get the hormones fixed to fix the energy levels.

Removed my story because said person is local, but my point was that people like Undertow likely eat more than they think.
Little snacks throughout the day like the coffee shop, crackers and cheese, beverages like Coke/orange juice/milk.. all of that adds up. It's easy to say, "I don't eat much" when all you had was orange juice and a small breakfast bar when you woke up, but that's 400 calories right there. If you're doing coffee with cream and sugar all morning, a full plated lunch with a Coke, a handful of nuts in the afternoon, a full plated dinner with a Coke, and a nighttime snack.. you're getting up there calorie wise.
When I waited tables, I was shocked at how many people clean their entire plate of food.

I enjoy when you post in these threads because you’re like half the size of everyone else (if I’m not mistaken) and 400 calories is a completely different thing to you than me/everyone else here
I can’t imagine how different my eating habits would be if I were a 100 lb woman

It’s half my day if I’m trying to lose
My maintenance calorie limit is just over 1200. The woes of being 4’10”
But my point remains! It’s the things you don’t notice.
I will say, a lot of it is luck. I’m really fascinated by Ozempic and I read the subReddit dedicated to it. And from what I can tell, a lot of people who struggle with their weight have something called “food, noise” where they think about food constantly. Ozempic shuts that off.
So I do believe it’s very difficult and complex! I just don’t like people arguing that they’re overweight because they defy science.

I generally eat two 1,000-1,500 calorie meals each day. I like that I can eat like 2,500 calories and be in a deficit.

yea ive read all the forums and man...for many they sound like all they think about is food. its like their whole day revolves around it. crazy
the ones that kill me ont here though are the ones that get mad because they cant "feast" with their family anymore because the medicine punishes that behavior and makes them sick
its like yea...no shite...thats what the medicine is designed to do...make you change those shitty habits

But man, all they need to do is reshape their outlook on it. I am a massive foodie. I love to cook, love to go out, love food. I just.. accept that I'm probably only going to have a little and box up the rest. There's still fun in that!
When I'm trying to lose (which I really need to be doing right now, but about to get in the car and head to Ruth's

So true. I'm sure it is eye opening if everything you ever do for fun revolves around food and now you can't enjoy it.

When I'm trying to lose (which I really need to be doing right now, but about to get in the car and head to Ruth's ), I always remind myself.. "Did what you ate at dinner with your friends affect how much fun you had? No. So order the healthy option, drink the vodka/soda, and have fun without setting yourself back."
preach damn it preach!!

definitely not taking you to be an arse or disrespectful at all and actually appreciate you answering me sincerely.
I agree that I overeat now (not by a lot, but I do) because I'm nowhere near as active as I was when I was younger.
and I even agree that we all overeat.
my question is what are the odds that 9 separate people with 9 different lifestyles all end up overeating at such strikingly similar rates at the roughly same ages?
a more specific example.
I'm roughly an inch shorter and about 5 pounds lighter than my dad was at my age.
our diets are not very similar (comparing him at 45 and me now), and our lifestyles are very different as well.
meaning we took 2 different paths to end up at nearly identical spots at 45 years old.
and other than 1 uncle, it's literally every male for 4 generations in my family.
all taking different routes, but all arriving at almost the exact same location at the same time.
