Based on what you’ve been saying it sounds like you’re not in horrible shape but not in good shape either. If so, I think the answer to your question is rather simple: there are a lot of routes that lead to mediocrity.
I realize that sounds harsh or rude, but that’s not at all my intent. If you have an “average” body type, there are so many ways to get there, genetics included. That’s why it’s the “average”.

1. People are DUMB
2. People hate hard things
3. People can easily lie to themselves
“Man I should really get in shape. I look awful….. but that means waking up early and sweating and doing hard things and watching what I eat and trading enjoyment NOW for enjoyment LATER …… man that sounds like too much. I’ll eat another donut.”
The IED of sugar explodes into their bloodstream and they get a mild release of dopamine and their reward center lights up as all of those scary difficult thoughts melt away.

At 5'10/218, my BMI is 31.....obese. I wear 34 waist jeans. I'd have to drop down to 170 (48 lbs) to be on the upper end of "normal". frick all that.
