I blame it on the modern recliner.. it’s just hard to get up and out of it once you’ve plopped down.

3. I bet if you could measure it, people are drinking a lot more calories, which is a big factor for immobile people spending half their waking hours in front of a screen.

Obviously, sodas and energy drinks loaded with sugar don't help. But, I never cease to be amazed by the number of people slugging down 1,200 calorie mocha frappucinos. Fruit juices aren't all that great, either.

So every country with increased BMI is subject to this? Because that suggests one thing, and it isn't cultural.

I think people’s motivations are the same across all cultures. It’s to seek pleasure and avoid pain, (ironically we sometimes find pleasure in pain) and behaviors are complex in how we achieve this. Food is a very effective tool because of the evolutional reward it provides. Maybe any free country that allows big food corporations and advertising will succumb to what we have.

change in public image,

This is what I meant by cultural acceptance.

Anecdotally of coarse, I was a low carb advocate for a decade, and I realized the strong urge to eat carbs, then realized most of those foods also had just as many calories from fat, then realized it was basically a substance use disorder to moderate emotions mostly boredom. It’s hard to resist a dependency on food because you have to eat. Low carb gives me the tools to have a healthy relationship with food. But the desire to binge is engrained.

I feel like it’s part of a hedonistic culture now. People just want to do what feels good with no discipline. Just give in to every craving in life.. all aspects of life.

Global warming. We don't burn as many calories keeping our temperature up.

You are doing an awful lot of work to avoid any discussion that there is something more at play. Somehow it's this one thing that can cross cultures to produce the same effect, as though people did not seek pleasurable behaviors before. It's a terrible argument, and you can't seem to understand the implications of it.

ETA - baby boomer here. The most common option for a Coca Cola was a 6-1/2 ounce bottle full of cane sugar. After one you'd had enough. Now we've graduated to 64 ounce Big Gulps. Is that really a good thing?

So Bloomberg was RIGHT.

Bottom line, there are lots of reasons, but the number one reason on which we all can agree is a lack of personal dignity. I don't want to say "pride", because these fatties sure do seem big and proud.

When I got to college and started to slack off with more smoking, more drinking, and less working out, I was on my way to getting a gut and bitch tits. Now, I'm in my 40's and looking better than I ever have. I'm not even proud of my physique or appearance, I just developed a strong dislike for looking in the mirror and seeing biscuit dough.

Look in the mirror and make appropriate changes fatties!

I really hate how no one dresses up anymore. For where a suit used to be expected now people put on their blue jeans and nicest t shirt.
