Make your argument.
Student loan debt holders should not get a taxbreak while other loan holders do not.

Next you will want auto-loan forgiveness, and mortgage/rent forgiveness.
Don't fricking borrow it if you can't/won't pay it back.
I paid mine off 5 yrs after I was done with college. Double and Tripled up on payments when I could.
It's called being a fricking adult.

Not to hijack ...
Not only am I against forgiveness, but I’m very against the idea of universal “free college” as well. Not everyone belongs in college, in fact the majority of folks do not.
What happens when college is free and the jerkoffs go for a year or two and drop out? Never even attended class for their “free college”. Who’s paying for that? Right now when this happens, either they or (sorry) their parents are on the hook for those payments. What happens when college becomes free... then WE are all on the hook and subsidizing that irresponsible behavior.
Also is there a limit to “free college”? 4 years? 5 years? Or maybe only 7 year track like my brother in law?
bullshite.

Across the board forgiveness is bullshite and will never happen.
That said, the fact the government charges interest on student loans is also bullshite. The country improves competitively on the global stage when more and more of our population can afford school. The fact people are putting in time and effort that will have positive results on this country should be "interest" enough.

You make that decision to take the loans to better yourself which is fine.
At the same time pay it back as it is an investment in you.

So you want the government to lose money on student loans?

quote:Yeah, that's shitty. I'm all for helping people who want to help themselves. Federally backed, nondischargable, 0% interest loans are "fair", IMO.
I went to LSU for law school. Good credit back then, excellent credit now. My loans range from 5.5% to 7.65%. According to Fed Loan servicing, my average interest rate is 6.58%.
We shouldn't try to frick someone just because they can't afford to pay their for their education at the time that they attended universities, and I believe a large reason why people don't want to pay back their loans, is that they feel like they are getting fricked with interest.

How does it affect you and dont say showing responsibility. Most of you went and got a full 4 years degree for what we paid for a semester's meal plan.
I took out 20k+ worth of subsidized student loans while I was at LSU. I used that money on gas (commuted my whole time there), beer, partying, movies, whatever the hell I wanted to. My dad always told me that I'd regret doing it, and I always told him that he was wrong because I was fully aware of the situation I'd be putting myself in later.
So here I am about to turn 30 with 6k or so left to owe. I took that money and I recognized what I was doing when I did so. It is MY responsibility to pay it back. Man the frick up and be an adult. There are plenty of relief programs to let you defer payments if you can't afford to pay anything back immediately so take advantage of that if need be, but I will NOT pay for loan forgiveness for people who lack the mental capacity to understand that there are consequences to your actions. frick that concept and frick you if you think I owe any of my hard earned money to pay for your idiocy. If that's the warped idea that your mind has cooked up to legitimize you wanting to pass the buck to someone else, then consider me a fricking boomer.
Once again, frick you.

You already said that. Why not though?
I assume you would like to jettison the mortgage interest deduction, the student loan interest deduction as well as the IRA reductions too.

Tuition has gone up though because loans are so cheap.

Please tell me that you do understand that “loan forgiveness” doesn’t mean the loan just disappears into thin air and it still has to be paid.... maybe not by you but by other taxpayers.
So the question is, why do you feel you are entitled to SOMEONE ELSE’s money to pay off YOUR loan?

They don't exactly make it very clear to 17 yr olds not even done with high school yet with very little knowledge of loans

Make them dischargeable and watch how the requirements go up. And tuition come down as colleges have to actually compete to get quality students.

Law school is expensive. Not only that, we literally were barred from working our 1L year. I pay almost $400/mo. It doesn't even cover the interest. I've paid something like $35,000. I owe more today than I did when I graduated.
Posted on 3/25/20 at 4:01 pm to Epic Cajun
Loan forgiveness is a myth. There is no such thing. Someone loaned you the money and you agreed to pay it back to them with interest.
If you don't pay it back, you are stealing. If the GubMint pays it back, they are stealing from me.
