30 years ago, I paid my way through college on a part time job salary
Today , the buildings are the same, the teachers, in many cases, are the same. The structure is the same with a trend toward online learning.

So why has tuition gone up well beyond the cost of living over the past 30 years?

Amazing what happens when there is an unlimited source of loans out there to pay for no matter what your prospective income or credit history is isn’t it

Because people continue to pay. If less and less people start to enroll and they need to gain more students they will likely lower the price.

1. free money via government-backed loans

2. administrative explosions

3. nicer campuses, dorms, and amenities

Chemistry and math books, the exact same material, but on different pages and a different hard cover, but prices up from $30 back then to $100+++ now.

I think LSU tuition was about $1200 when I went. It's crazy to see how much more expensive it is now.

Kids are increasingly dumber. That’s why it was so cheap for boomers, history’s smartest generation.

TOPS - give money for tuition. State raises tuition....

You should check out how much they're charging for apartments close to campus.....

Because its a glorified welfare program with 1 administrator for every 2 students

An administrator that would be unqualified to have a real job

When you have idiotic positions like Chief Diversity Officers making $150K/year those type of salaries add up. That is only the tip of the iceberg.

Because they can charge more and students can pay for it with loans regardless of cost.

The nondischargeability status of student loans in a bankruptcy is mind-boggling.

Yep I could work for the summer and cover my tuition. It’s sickening what they charge for an undergrad degree.

Think my last semester of college was $1800 for tuition.

Yep. Tennessee's was only $1,300 or so a semester for 12-15 hours when I attended in the late 90s
