I respect the hustle. Full automobile comprehensive coverage is easy $200/car, if you're insuring it with the lengths. That's $2,400 a year. Tons of lower class people can't afford $2,400 on car insurance.
Except the law doesn’t require them to have comprehensive coverage. Only state minimum liability. I don’t understand how the cost of comprehensive coverage is at all relevant here.

In most states that indicates an abandoned car and it will have a time and date on it which triggers the clock. After X amount of time, depending on the jurisdiction, it is fair game to be towed and impounded.

That doesn’t mean they didn’t have insurance. They put those on vehicles that are left on the side of the road (for whatever reason) and tow them if the owner doesn’t pick the vehicle up within so many days.
Basically it’s a way for cops/DOTD (can’t recall whether it’s the police or DOTD that do this) to give folks time to get their shite taken care of if they break down or something, without just allowing abandoned vehicles to sit around forever.

So it’s ok for them to avoid responsibility for their actions because they’re poor?

I did in 1995. I was finishing college, and rear-ended someone on the way to a job interview. Did $800 damage to an 88 Camaro. All I could do was promise the victim I would send him my first pay check coming out of college. I'm lucky the victim's father didn't kick my arse. But I paid him back within 2 months.
Seems like you wear this as a badge of honor as part of your “bootstraps” story. I’d be interested to know what line of work you’re in. How many times do you cut corners and roll the dice because the job has to get done but the budget isn’t there.

Electrical engineering. And I don't. My job is to get to keep people from getting hurt, not to do stupid shite that gets people hurt.

Those vehicles are broken down and the officer leaves the orange notice on them after the fact

So it’s ok to disregard social responsibility and put others at risk but you can’t disregard professional responsibility to put others at risk?
Where exactly is the line when it becomes ok?

I lived this life from 1990 to 1995. Being poor sucks. I'm not poor anymore, but I am opposed to fining a poor person for not buying something he can't afford.
I was poor right out of college, and if you can't afford to drive, take the fricking bus. I had to work two jobs to afford life, and now assholes driving around without insurance cost me additional money in uninsured, and will eventually hit me or my fiance and run, costing us more money. Uninsured motorists are scum.

It's hilarious how often the people that defend groups the most generally infantile and coddle them, ultimately showing a bitter level of disrespect than the average citizen would.

Get a bicycle
Catch a ride with a coworker
Ride the bus
Finance an additional $2200 on top of your student loans
The entire point of this is don’t put others at risk to justify your situation.

If it had been you, you’d have gotten a ticket. Certain types are punished, certain types are let go.

How would no insurance tow a car- or anything, for that matter?
Posted on 8/11/24 at 9:29 am to Asharad
The average auto insurance policy in 1990 was $171.87. Google search That's about $15 per month or 3.25 hrs of your wages per month or 50 cents per day. Tell us the rest of the story. You could have picked up enough cans on the side of the road to cover 50 cents per day.

Hate to say it... but the government probably needs to assume the responsibility... create a special tax for dealerships that sell 10+ year old cars and lenders who finance them
