there has literally never been a major empire or advanced civilization below the sahara.
The Mali Empire was in Sub Saharan Africa albeit directly below it, and the Great Zimbabwe and may have been the capital of the great kingdom during Africa's iron age.

Over three-quarters of African countries are still ranked in the bottom half for the per capita GDP ranking worldwide. Over 20 African countries have a power purchasing parity GDP of less than $2,000 per capita. Another 10 have a GDP per capita PPP between $2,000 and $3,000.

Can a monarchy have multiple kings and queens? Have they brought the battle for the crown to inner-city America?

I’d say Ethiopia but that’s more East African than sub Saharan
Of course all those were built on the conquest and subjugation of other tribes which we are told is evil when European powers did it.
Despite it being the status quo for EVERY CIVILIZATION EVER

The Mail Empire is borderline Saharan, Sub-Saharan but considered “Western” — same with the Songhai Empire and Ghana Empire
The Great Zimbabwe
Kingdom of Kongo
That’s off the top of my head. There’s not a ton of them, but there was limited contact down in the south for a while. Great Zimbabwe and Kongo are firmly southern African empires that existed for a while and were technologically

Before europeans came, there wasn't even a "large city" in sub saharan africa.
Great Zimbabwe had 20,000 people living in a 2 square mile town.
I haven’t studied African history on its own, but if you’ve never heard of these places it’s kind of on you.

Friends of mine (husband and wife) went on a large group trip/bike ride through parts of Africa giving bicycles to locals for transportation. They would stop in villages along the way and camp. One night a local approached the husband and offered to trade a goat for his wife

We need some details:
How does she like living in Africa?
How did he cook the goat?

Until they look themselves in the mirror and realize reality they will never change. That’s on them not us.

This is an excellent read and an eye opening account of Africa.
