Whose side do you think you’d have been on? Harold Godwinson’s or William the Conqueror’s?

At the time I'm sure I would have been on Harold's side, but the benefit of hindsight leads me to believe William was better for the future of England.

King Harold was so close to holding off 2 invasions in less than 3 weeks on opposite ends of the country. Easily the most exciting part of medieval England

Would just like to point out that Godwinson fought and beat Harald Hardrada at Stamford Bridge 3 weeks before Hastings, taking heavy losses, after having marched from London up there, then marched back down in 2 weeks, and still nearly won at Hastings. So him.

It’s certainly possible, but it was likely worse until at least the Tudor era. Having cross-channel possessions led to centuries of conflict on the continent.
In the short term, the Harrying of The North was an absolutely brutal subjugation. By the time the Domesday Book was written, the vast majority of English landowners had been replaced by Normans.
It would be incredibly interesting to see how history would’ve played out had Harold won. The English language would probably be mutually intelligible with Dutch.
With that being said, I’m rolling with Harold. I’d rather go down rocking a stache with the boys in the shield wall

British monarchs have been an almost unbroken line of shitty people up to the present day. Henry VIII was the most flamboyant but nearly all have been right bastards in one way or another.

Honestly I don’t actually know what side we were on. I always thought Godwinson but frick if I know now. I know we fought with the white roses in the British Civil War and lost, and were with Mary Queen of the Scots, on my moms side

I took this image at Battle as Hastings is actually a nearby port city on the coast. And the battlefield was just out in an unnamed rural area.
So nowadays, the Battle of Hastings was actually contested at Battle.
Since I’ve outlived Harold as this is purportedly the spot where he died, I guess I’m Team William.
