This was a good enough thread for me to finally register an account. FishinTygah mentioned a couple of my Patek's earlier. Obtuse1 probably said everything that needs saying. I don't have nearly the collection he has (wow) but have gone through a handful of watches over the years. There was a period where I was down on Rolex and thought it wasn’t refined enough, but now they are my favorite all-around brand. Solid movement, reasonable service cost, and in most instances hold their value very well. It seems like the right stainless sports models will appreciate in value enough to offset maintenance and insurance cost. You aren’t likely to make much money, relative to other investment vehicles, but you aren’t likely to lose money either.

Collection history:
Rolex Explorer II Polar 16570 (bought, sold, re-bought from same person, gave to wife)
Panerai Luminor 112 (sold)
Rolex Yacht-Master SS/Pt 16622 (sold)
Rolex Submarinar Anniversary 16610 (sold *cry*)
Patek Aquanaut 5167/1a (considering selling since very close to latest acquisition)
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15300 (sold *cry*)
Rolex Explorer II 216570
Panerai Luminor 00510
Patek Nautilus 3700
Wife also has a Rolex Yacht-Master SS/Pt 168622

It has taken me a bit to find the right mix of watches that I feel are well rounded. I only have 2 watch-flip regrets and that’s the Submariner since it has gone up a lot in value, and the Royal Oak since I miss it and believe it will go up in value.

The Explorer II has really my favorite and go-to for most occasions. Going to my deer camp? Explorer. Going to work? Explorer. Going to the beach? Explorer Going out somewhere with the family? Explorer. Compared to a Submariner or Datejust, most don’t know what it is so doesn’t attract unnecessary or negative attention. It is nice enough to feel special but not so delicate or finished in a manner that makes me worry about wearing it under almost any condition.

Panerai gives me something to wear if the occasion is more casual. Great weekend watch and love the manual wind + 8 day power reserve.

Patek Aquanaut is special to me and I even named my oldest child Patek. My grandfather was a railroad engineer but after losing a leg on Iwo Jima, had to find something he could do sitting and became a watchmaker. This definitely aided in my fascination with mechanical watches. I have recently acquired a Patek Nautilus 3700 (Jumbo) which is the first Nautilus. As mentioned by Obtuse1, it was designed by the renowned Gerald Genta who also designed the Royal Oak. I knew it had some mechanical issues going into the buy so it is currently w/ Patek getting serviced. It manually winds and keeps great time, but the rotor is not keeping the mainspring wound so doesn’t keep itself wound w/ movement. Fingers crossed it’s nothing major.

Great thread everyone.

Great post, and impressive collection history.

Question: do you miss the YachtMaster you sold?

I have one in the blue dial with platinum bezel. Love the looks, but the bezel is an absolute magnet for scratches.

I'm keeping it regardless, very sentimental reasons.

I'm looking at Panerai next, you have a favorite?

There are a boatload of Panerai references but the cynical will tell you they only make two watches.

For a first Panerai, I always suggest a 111 or 776. They represent the modern Panerai best to me. Polished Luminor 44mm case, crown guard, sandwich dial (111 only), manual wind and on a band. You can change the look drastically by switching straps. While I have 2 or 3 for each of my Panerai some people have dozens. There is a whole cottage industry built around Panerai straps. Shark, ostrich leg, horn back, sting ray, croc, gator, ammo strap etc. If the 44mm Luminor is too large they make a 42mm Luminor cases but they are all automatic and I just prefer manual winds except for some complications that don't come in manual wind which can be as simple as having a date. If you want a smaller watch that still screams Panerai I am wearing my 512 tonight. It is a 42mm Radiomir 1940 case (no wire lugs) with a sandwich dial and a manual wind movement it has been replaced by the 574. If you want a Radiomir with wire lugs then the 45mm 609 is a good choice.

To recap I think the 111 is basically the perfect first Panerai, but only available used. The 776 is close but has a sausage dial, not a sandwich dial.

That is a very cool watch and the prices have increased along with the 5711s. The 3700 actually has a much more intricately built case based on the original design, the 5711 looks basically the same on the outside (except size) but the case construction was simplified which is rather a shame.

Because of you I've been looking at Rolex watches for the last two weeks.

Like another poster, I think I want something from the year I was born. Anything special to look out for in the mid 80s?

Larger hands. Same for wrist. My daily wear at the moment is a seiko with 55 fathoms mods. Or whatever 007 or 009 I feel like destroying...

The mid-80s were a rough time for mechanical watches arguably at their nadir.

The most sought after birth year watch is almost certainly the Submariner with the Speedmaster Pro a distant second. I have never really wanted a birth year watch but understand the appeal. Being born in the late 60's a pre-moon Speedmaster would be the perfect watch for me. As the US was space crazy at the time it is the most culturally relevant watch of the period and is still a highly respected watch now.

Quartz was really the thing in the 80s and if you were born from 1983 on through the mid-80s the most culturally relevent watches would be the original G-Shock squares and Swatch watches. I assume that really isn't what you are looking for though. Of the mechanical watches of the day I think a two-tone Datejust with a fluted bezel represents the period almost perfectly but it isn't everyones taste and two tone goes in and out of style, though it is back on the way in or so I am told.

Another connection to 85 and 87 would be Bond watches. In a View to a Kill bond wore a DateJust and also several different Seiko divers which you could research if that floats your boat. In The Living Daylights, he wore a Heuer diver, while it is quartz I think it is pretty cool but probably rare. It could have been a Heuer or a Tag Heuer at that time but nobody can be sure, if it were me I would seek out the Heuer version.

The Subs for that era would be the 5513 and 16800.

If it were me I would look for a 5513 with nice creamy markers and possibly a spider cracked dial but the latter is more of a personal thing because I find Rolex dial defects to be fascinating partly because it makes the dial completely unique.

Here is a picture of a 5513 from 1985 with creamy markers and a moderately cracked dial.

Forgot to add, my Fifty Fathoms says hi.

Blancpain also made a blue version of the 5015 which I often wish I had gotten instead.

I saw. Your budget is considerably greater than mine

I liked the splashy blue when I bought mine, sad part is at this point I have 10x the amount into it that it is worth.

Seiko modding can be a cool hobby and some of them like the Fifty Five are really awesome. Hell, it is five fathoms better than my Blancpain. One neat thing about Seiko watches if you chose one for your birth year watch is you can actually date them down to the month via their serial number.

Obtuse,

What are your thoughts on the gray market? Sellers like joma shop? Also, how do you feel about internet sellers such as Bob's watches who offer certifications? I want to get a Rolex but leaning towards buying used and will on buy used if I can get the watch with box and original tags. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Last time I got my Rolex serviced, the tech wanted to replace my face and bezel because of the wear. I told him Hell No. I think he wanted the aged parts and thought I was a sucker or something.

I'm curious to get your take on Costco carrying Rolex watches (I've seen Yachtmasters and Datejusts)? I know Rolex is strict about controlling their dealer network and have been told the watches they carry have come from Rolex dealers who have been unable to sell them but not sure of the accuracy of that. It's been awhile since I've compared them to dealer pricing but the discounts were pretty sizable. Also not sure what warranty/return policy Costco offered on them.

Geez. If y’all are dissing the James Bond watch, this watch conversation definitely isn’t me. I personally like the vintage Omega Seamasters.

My friend just bought a green faced yellow gold Daytona from DavidSW, sometimes that’s the only way to get one. It’s more expensive than an AD, but they come with the warranty and everything you’d get from one.

LOL

How old is it?

"LEts replace that ugly matte dial for a fresh new one."

"You don't want the word 'Submariner' in red anymore do you? It looks dull anyway."

Mid 70’s no date Sub. I had it when I was at LSU and used to never take it off. It’s got some wear and the spiderweb dial looks cool. The bezel is worn but readable. It’s mine and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

If you are looking at mid 80’s sports models be aware that this was a transition time for the dials. They went from having no gold surrounds around the hour markers called a matte dial to a dial with gold surrounds called a gloss dial. The difference can be several thousand dollars.

Matte dial 16800

Gloss dial
