As always, on things like this, it would come down to the individual.

Both knights and samurai had alternating periods of time where there were relatively fewer or relatively larger numbers. There were also extended periods of conflict and extended periods of peace. A knight or samurai taken both from a period of time when there were relatively fewer AND an extended period of conflict is likely to be a very formidable warrior.

What is a crazy factoid is, at one point during the Mongol era, there were European medieval knights battling Mongols at one end and Japanese samurai at the other and neither knew the other even existed.

French won the war when they developed artillery.
Which also wrecks knights.

There use to be a show called "Deadliest Warrior" that would simulate different types of fighters like this. It was entertaining to watch but had a lot of flaws. Episodes included a knight vs pirate and another with a samurai vs Viking.

People think knights where slow and clumsy in armor. These men trains from young boys wearing mail and armor and fighting with swords. The knight would be as mobile and agile as a samari. Knights fought for hours in armor. The knight would have the advantage.

Yeah. Medieval Europe was a constant meat grinder. Anyone that was an elite fighter in those days was a killing machine. That is, until heavier ranged weapons were developed.

Polearms are probably the coolest weapon class out there, and absolutely the best in formation. One of the factors in the Mounted knight going the way of the Dodo

All of this applies equally to medieval Japan.

I have no idea who would win. But the lightly armored mongols did pretty well invading Central Europe. I do think medieval Japanese steel was superior to medieval European steel, but that could just be Quentin Tarantino talking.

Samurai were archers first and didn't have real armor

If you take away the Samurai’s bow, you need to take away the knights armor. Samurai couldn’t be effective archers in such armor, without a bow they’d likely have developed different armor.

Listen to Hardcore History Wrath of the Khans.

A lot of that was tactics, horsemanship and just sheer ruthlessness.

The combination of such skilled horseman and the natural terrain of the steppe pretty much eliminated the need for supply lines. It wasn’t that the European equipment wasn’t good, far from it. They were just fighting a new type of enemy that wouldn’t engage until the trap was shut.

Much different from the samurai.

The Last Samurai is also a better movie than A Knight’s Tale so there’s that to consider.

If you leave the samurai’s bow and keep the mounted combat, the knight still wins. The samurai bow were designed to fight against other Japanese armor.

Not the gambeson, mail and steel armor of the mounted knight. Their arrows wouldn’t do much unless they found a weak point, and one on one the mounted knight is going to be hard to hit with one bow firing if he’s coming at speed.
