It’s hard for me to understand how anyone can get addicted to alcohol. It’s such a crappy drug. I understand addictions to pills and whatnot but not alcohol. It’s just an ok high with a hangover.

I'm an alcoholic and I get what you're saying. I've been sober now 3.5 years and it's much rarer to find a 'pure alcoholic' in the rooms of A.A. then people realize. When I was in treatment. 'only being an alcoholic' was probably about 5% vs other drugs. Most alcoholics are drug addicts too but many drug addicts can't stand alcohol.

Unfortunately, alcohol is one of the harshest on the body also. Alcohol enters every cell in your body so the withdrawals are horrific. Truly horrific. It's also very cheap and available at damn near every store. It's not about deleting your dope dealer. Circle K is my dope dealer. Also, everywhere you look an alcoholic sees others drinking with impunity. No one socially does heroin or goes out for meth after work.

I guess I'm kinda lucky that the way I drink, there won't be a long 'I think Supadave is drinking again' type thing. When I drink, everyone knows it instantly. I'm a sprinter, not a marathoner. If I start drinking again, everyone that loves me will find out by reading the newspaper. The only 'if' will be if it's in the crime section or death notices.

Most people go throughout several kinds of treatment or therapy, you pick up the positive in each one. In the end, it's how bad do you want to quit and what is your accountability.

I agree 100%. You have to get to that place where you just know, without a doubt, that you cannot do it successfully. If I take a sip of vodka, I lose everything and make my family cry for the next 10 years. Vodka isn't worth me making my family cry for 10 years.

That's what did it for me. Me knowing that if I kept drinking that I was going to die wasn't enough for me for stop. I knew that and kept anyway. It's the other repercussions that kept me sober long enough to finally get a straight head about the whole matter.

There is no 'one size fits all' approach. If someone could find it, they'd be a very rich person very fast.

I see you in a fast track to drinking again now that you're out of prison. It won't be long till you're back in there good luck.

This thread is one good example as to why I'm completely fine with, even proud of admitting that I don't drink, never developed a taste for alcohol, will never get into alcohol and will be sober for the rest of my life.

Every time I come across these stories, feels like I dodged a huge bullet.

I'm praying for everyone in this thread. Godspeed to all of you.

I’m an alcoholic and I get what he’s saying. There are some good drugs put there. They just turn on you real quick too.

what? Lol

I've never had an alcohol issue. I can go months without drinking and it never cross my mind. I tell my doctor when asked that 'i drink seasonally' meaning I only drink during foot season.

Heroin was my issue. I did it on and off for 20 years.

Eta: and I never been to a prison contrary to popular belief. I spent 60 days in parish jail for probation violation which was dropped and I was released from probation 'satisfactory' back in 2016

If you REALLY want to quit I would suggest looking into “Campral”....it really helps and a lot of doctors don’t even know about it...just do a little research into it....just a suggestion

Day at a time is the best advice to heed. Don't worry about next week, next year. Just get through today.
