Fair statement.
But who did not get the sh*t knocked out of them by Jim Thorpe?

Love him or hate him, one of the coolest stories I’ve ever heard is as he’s in the locker room before throwing out that pitch in Yankee Stadium, Jeter looks back at the most powerful man in the world and tells him dead seriously “whatever you do, don’t short hop it.”

Washington was said to be the best horseman in Virginia. And given the aristocratic hunting culture in Tidewater Virginia at the time, that was saying something.
TR was a legit badass by sheer force of will. He once headed a posse to capture an outlaw in the middle of a Dakota blizzard. He faced down a war party of Sioux braves who were off the reservation looking to raise a little hell. After his presidency he was on a small party to explore an uncharted river in the Amazon and should have died half a dozen times...but didn’t. Though the experience ruined his health and undoubtedly shortened his life.

Yrah, I read the parts where he obsessively planted favorable news stories about himself. There's no doubt that a great deal of what you think you know about Teddy came from his lifelong self-mythologizing.

Not sure why it pains people so much to give him his fitness due it isn't like there are plenty of really fit people that are stupid and plenty of horribly out of shape ones that are great leade
There's been about 4,000 posts in this thread saying Obama is fit

As famous a figure he was during his own lifetime, to believe half of those stories are fake or exaggerated is either willfully ignorant, or downright stupid.
He was probably the first president to be covered by the media in any significant way. If Twitter had existed in his time, he probably would have been as famous/infamous for his words as Trump has become.

That is one category Barrack Obama would be at the top of.

His cousin Franklin was a pretty famous figure in his own right who managed to "fake or exaggerate" his ability to walk.

Franklin also wasn't literally galloping all over the country side. He was actively trying to hide it, and had the Secret Service destroying photographs that showed him in a wheelchair.
Theodore had a lot of adversaries, yet you don't see many accounts from them claiming TR made up or exaggerated aspects of his life. If he had, they would have undoubtedly used that to smear his name. And Roosevelt's reputation and image were very important to him. He believed actions spoke louder than words ("speak softly and carry a big stick").

quote:He wasn't as fit as W or what Clinton eventually got to. He was a soft middle aged man who engaged in occasional light exercise. Nothing terrible, but nothing anyone who is fit would consider fit.
He was almost certainly more fit than any president in the last 50 years while in office
