A former boss (not an American) was working on a PhD in some science, but in order to do his work he had to build his own instruments. He found that he enjoyed designing and building the instruments more than the science so after he finished up his PhD, he came to America and started a company from scratch to design and build these instruments. 20 years later he sold the company—his share of the company was worth $70M. Back home he is now an investor, entrepreneur (he started another company in the education space and started a successful science magazine), philanthropist (he founded a science institute, and he also later donated the science magazine to a non-profit science organization), served several years as a university chancellor, and is currently the chief science advisor for the government. Smart dude but the thing that impressed me the most was how hard he worked. That's at least as important as smarts if you're going to accomplish anything.

Former professor of mine. Started as an English Lit major at an Ivy League school and went on to get an advanced degree. Polymath. Polyglot. Piano virtuoso. Linguist. Cryptologist. Poet. Chess Master. Has a few unique hobbies that he understands very deeply. If he wasn't so socially awkward, he would be a candidate to be a real live Indiana Jones.

He's apolitical but probably most identifies with classic liberalism. He remembers every detail of everything he's ever read, and he has a unique way of disarming polemicists of any ilk.

His brusque, plain-spoken style of communication makes him seem intimidating at first, but he's also one of the kindest people I've ever met.

I’m named after a paternal uncle who’s a MIT Physics PhD.

He finished school in the early 1950s and went to work for a Fortune 500 company.

He’s still “of counsel” there.

Does the NYT crosswords in ink.

Corrects scientific journals on the reg, not just in his field.

He tells everyone that my pop was the smartest sibling of the litter.

Good dude. I’ll see him in a couple of weeks.

My maternal grandmothers 1st cousin from Grand Cane was 1 of the first 3 women admitted to Tulane. The 2nd to graduate in 1921, Pharmacy. She was the only pharmacist at the old Confederate Memorial Hospital, later LSU-Shreveport, until shortly before she retired in the 1970's.

Bob Dole was a nice guy to chat with. We used to call each other to chat from time to time having gotten acquainted during his stent overseeing the FHA.

Of course my Dad who was a Civil Engineer and retired as the Purchasing Manager of, at the time, the 3rd largest oil company in the world.

A couple of my professors like Pat Wojtkiewicz, Shreveport Lab Director, North Louisiana Crime Lab, who is the co-discoverer of the cure for brucellosis and teaches microbiology for NSU. Also Dr. Kumar, anatomy and physiology professor, who taught on all 6 populated continents including the top 3% of all med students on the African continent. For a time he was the world's foremost authority on malaria.

But I'd have to say overall, the smartest was Ali. He was the Finance Minister of Iran under the Shah and escaped to America to become the largest auto wholesaler in N. America. Absolutely brilliant man, very much a gentleman, highly valued honesty and integrity. Pretty sure he was highly educated in the UK and/or Switzerland.

my great uncle... retired brigadier general and commandant of the jump program at fort bragg for the last 10 years of his career. did 3 tours in 'nam as a paratrooping sniper and not once did he get caught.

retired at 60 and went full time into hand crafting seaworthy vessels out of wood up to 40 ft long. he also distilled and aged very good whiskey from a recipe passed down from my great grandfather that he perfected.

unfortunately and before i got to spend much valuable time with him, he had brain surgery and lost nearly all his prior memories, including boat building and the old family recipe.
