I finally checked out KISS in 2020 and became a fan, mainly because of Ace.

The concert below is peak KISS IMO:

1996 VMA

New York Groove became the all time #1 played tune in my music library, mainly because of me listening to it over and over again in ‘20-‘21.

And regarding the makeup: It had become stale and was seen as a relic of the 1970’s when they removed it.

The Lick It Up video may be the best thing ever.

Women's boots and Gene staring me down through my television creeped me out.

He was great in the movie Runaway (1984), however.

Back in the 70's Dustin sidelined as a drummer. He was really good but after his performance in All the President's Men and Kramer vs Kramer his success infringed upon Gene Simmon's huge ego and he was booted from KISS

A funny story about that Lick it Up Video. This was back when MTV was huge and there was a big push to make these very cinematic music videos (Michael Jackson's Thriller, etc.) So for Kiss' first video they had a director who planned to use a studio stage to build an elaborate set of a post-apocalyptic world with burned out apartment buildings and rusted out cars and trash everywhere. It was going to cost like a million dollars to build the set. Paul Stanley said "why don't we just shoot it in the Bronx? It already looks just like that and we can do it for free."

So that's what they did.

There has not been a single second of my life where I've wanted to see or listen to that flaming pile of shite. Repetitive garbage, in fact, just hearing it made me NOT want to party. I'd rather just go to work, because at least there, I know I won't hear their shitty music.

And they intentionally cropped Vinnie Vincent out of 95% of the video.

Well, only the two main guys were Jewish (Paul Stanley/Stanley Eisen and Gene Simmons/ Gene Klein/Chaim Witz).

Ace Frehley was of German/Dutch heritage, and Peter Criss, Eric Carr and Vinnie Vincent were all Italian.

Paul has a deformed ear which is why he has kept his hair so long.

I always thought "Paul Stanley's Ear" would be a great Kiss tribute band name.

It actually reignited their careers.
KISS had floundered from 1979 to 1984, releasing only one good album in that time (Creatures of the Night).
While Creatures should have been the album to jumpstart them, taking off the makeup for Lick It Up is what pushed them over the top again.
Lick It Up is a great album..

It was time at the time. But the reunion tour in '96 was great nostalgia and the number 1 tour of 96/97.
