My very first car was a 54 Plymouth Plaza with a flathead 6 and a 3 speed manual transmission. Then the next was a 59 Ford Galaxie with another 3 speed manual transmission.
Been riding motorcycles for 56 years now and all of them were either 4 or 5 speed transmissions.
Last manual transmission vehicle I owned was a 95 Ford Ranger with a 5 speed manual.

Learned in a 1954 GMC pickup with 3 on the tree manual transmission. My dad bought it at an Indiana DOT auction for $100.
I seem to remember it had a manual choke that had to be pulled out before starting... maybe.

quote:lol - my son came home a few weeks ago with a couple of friends who wanted to go hunting. One of the friends drove a Jeep Wrangler manual and left it in the driveway with the keys in it.
They were both amazed that their mother and I both could drive a manual....
My wife couldn't get her car out of the garage, so she fired up that old Jeep, pulled it out of her way and onto the curb. When she got back, my son & his friends were shocked his momma knew how to drive a stick.

When I met my wife, she drove a Honda Accord with a stick, that's when I knew I was going to marry her.

Ford F150. I liked that truck but can't stand Fords these days.

Mine was a dump truck hauling beans on the farm. Hardest part for me was my feet touching the pedal.

Who learned to drive in a vehicle with a clutch?
Serious question. Do they even make manual transmissions nowadays?

When I was 14, I learned to drive on a 61 Chevy pickup (farm truck) with three on the tree and a Massey Ferguson tractor. I now have a 31 Model A pickup, 39 Buick Special, 45 USMC GPW (Jeep made at the Ford plant) - all with manual transmissions.

Learned on a early 90s F250 with a built-on glass rack. That was at 13 or 14 years old. That was 25ish years ago. Been nearly 15 years since I last drove a manual with a stick. I don't miss it at all.

Took my driver test in a 4 speed Chevette. Parallel parking was a breeze.
Learned in a squarebody Chevy K20 and a 1965 442.

We were also a Falcon family. The fist car I remember was our 63 Falcon wagon exactly like this one. It had a straight six cylinder engine & a three on the tree tranny. My brother got it when he was in high school. It sounded like a tank when the manifold gaskets burned out. As little kids we would lie on our backs with our heads at the very back of the car and watch the reflection of the world upside down. We didn't need hallucinogenics!

Taught both daughters how to drive a straight shift, how to change a flat, check the oil and add to the radiator.
My dad was convinced I was a complete idiot the first time he tried to teach me about a clutch and changing gears.
It was, "hit the clutch, put it in first and give it some gas." I remember asking what is first.
It was worse than holding the flashlight for those who have been there.

Dad had a late 70s Toyota pickup with a 4 speed and I was allowed to go up and down the driveway practice the clutch and shifting from R to 1. He had to know I took joyrides around the neighborhood , right?
