I posted this in the stickied thread but it needs to be here too:

I find it hypocritical that Trump would praise Louisiana which has 1,800 deaths and a population of 4.7 and chastise Sweden less than 24 hours later. Sweden has 2,500 deaths and a population of 10 million. They’re doing better than us. The shutdown in those other socialist countries he listed goes well beyond what we do here.

And just to add to the point:

The last 3 days, Louisiana has had 27, 61, and 44 deaths totaling 132. Sweden has had 80, 81, 107 totaling 268. Even today, after all Louisiana has done, it still has a slightly higher mortality rate than Sweden.

They arent, since herd immunity requires a large portion of the population(60-80% with covid) to be immune.

There is zero evidence at this point that "herd immunity" is even possible.

If it were that simple the cold and flu would have disappeared centuries ago and there would have never been a need for vaccines.

Swedes is a lot more compliant than Louisianans would have been though.

I do not believe. Imagine if the mayors or governor would have canceled the St Paddy's parades and then told everyone to social distance and wear masks.

Everyone flipped just at the idea of canceling the parade. I do think the measures went too far, but I don't think Louisiana would voluntarily be at the levels of social distancing we are now without the government stepping in and forcing businesses to make their employees telecommute or shutting down bars/restaurants.

Well according to the news reports I have read, Sweden thinks they are getting close to herd immunity in Stockholm. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

But your math doesn't work because there are many, many more infected than what is shown in the confirmed cases. At least two different antibody studies put the percent infected in NYC at over 20%. It may not be a stretch to say that Stockholm is getting close. Also, my understanding is that Sweden isn't testing as much. Their number o f "confirmed cases" is artificially low.

My point is the hypocrisy. It’s likely that Louisianans and Swedes are behaving similarly with one group being “forced” while the other is just going along with recommendations. At the same time, I don’t think everything we’ve done has been necessary. And I certainly laugh at the notion of masks being mandatory or essential for limiting spread.

Complete bullshite. No American is going to stay home from the hospital if they are having trouble breathing. And you are aware that there is no treatment for Covid? They can only put you on a vent and 80%-90% of those go on to die anyway.

The US also has the most ICU beds per capita in the world (I wonder what the difference between the US and the rest of the world is?). Sweden literally has a fraction (1/4) of the US ICU per capita capacity.

I am talking about medical expenses. I thought that was clear when an earlier part of my post mentioned how Swedish citizens would not go into debt do to a hospital stay for the virus.

But alas, the OT has proven a need to spell everything out for the simpletons.

America no universal health care. America pay for medical treatment out of pocket (as opposed to taxes, even though we also pay for some through taxes). Many Americans can not afford massive bill ( example here here here and other info here from the last link...

Hospitals that accept the grants will have to certify that they won’t try to collect more money than the patient would have otherwise owed if the medical attention had been provided in network
and that last one is for the insured)

But sure. Let's herd immunity.

Their death totals are more correct. No one has been testing enough for the case totals to be a stat that’s reliable. I don’t understand why so many people are hooked on that number. Different tests have different levels of accuracy. Different areas/states/countries have different testing guidelines. It’s not a one to one comparison much less a true value that represents reality. It should have zero bearing on how well/poorly an area is doing.

Are you saying we shouldn’t shoot for herd immunity because it could potentially cost Americans money?

Instead, we should shut down businesses, put millions on UE, add $2 trillion to the debt, and do our best to avoid herd immunity?

I think you're overstating this and understating the health of Louisianians.

Louisianians are in disgusting health relative to Swedes.

Prog logic..

Better off with the gubment taking care of you than making money and incurring debt.

Clearly, the shutdown won’t put anyone into debt and didn’t cost Americans a dime.

At this point, we have to make sure the high risk people stay in, but shoot for herd immunity for those who won't get too sick.

Which is the fallacy of that belief. There are a shitload of people who have been put out of work by government and haven't seen a dime of revenue in over a month.

True, it also has a larger HC capacity than Sweden too, particularly in critical and ICUs.

Show me their infection rate and death rate per capita, as compared to other nations

Click on Europe from there to compare

They seem to be middle of the pack with regards to tests & deaths per 1M in Europe.

It's certainly still an unknown, but if Sweden is truly closer to herd immunity, then you can assume there cases/deaths will trail off long before the other European countries and they could come out ahead.

But either way, they're not lagging way behind every other country like many would think without draconian they are about the need to lock down.

Only other side note I'd add, not saying the US should or should not have followed the Sweden model, but I'd say you can't in any way compare US to Sweden based on population size, density, and just how much more international the US is.

Population density of Louisiana is 105/sq mi. Population of all of Sweden is 64. That’s actually very close. However, Stockholm has almost a million people and has 13,000 people per sq mi. New Orleans is at about 2300 with a total pop of almost 400k.

If anything that shows that a large portion of Sweden’s population is living in very dense areas. It’s less spread out. So the comparison to Louisiana is actually more in Louisiana’s favor in that regard. Yet the mortality rate is currently higher.
