re: Who killed Halloween?

No one killed Halloween. It's just sadly not that big of a deal in the South, where the Bible thumpers rail against the evils of "Satan's Birthday."
I have several friends up North, like Maine, and Halloween is a month long celebrations with all neighbors decorating their yards and having huge parties. Just doesn't happen here that often.
If anything, blame your childhood memories. You'll never get the thrill of Trick or Treating back, unless you live through your child's experience. And even so, it's still not as awesome as it used to be.

Too many people putting Halloween, a very minor holiday, on a pedestal.
That's laughable. It may be minor to you, but it's a huge holiday that generates a ton of money in costumes, candy, and haunted houses.
Also, like Christmas, it's a month long celebration.
Halloween
Christmas
Thanksgiving
Those are my rankings for the Big 3. No other holiday touches those three.

Mardi Gras is bugger than two of those are here.
Thanksgiving gets overshadowed by Christmas now. It's really just an excuse to have family dinner.

Well yeah but I was going with national holidays and not one that's unique to mostly one city.

its all family specific
Thanksgiving is easily the biggest holiday with my family
my Dad builds an elaborate obstacle course and a zipline that goes through the woods that gets longer and bigger every year

yea lets go to peoples houses and get candy from random strangers in the middle of the night.
How many kids knocked on your door in the "middle of the night"?
Unless that's 7:00 PM for you, your argument doesn't even make sense.

Halloween was great in my neighborhood. Lots of kids having a good time, tons of houses participating, multiple haunted houses, lots of people cooking and giving out food and beer to the parents. Just an all American Halloween, and we're mostly all Baptists up here in God's Country.
Some houses had really good haunted houses. It's my second favorite holiday.

I was with my kid Trick or treating last night. We had a blast . I was T-rex.
So many pictures with kids. Will do it again even though i lost 10 lbs. from sweating so bad.

My plan was to go as King Kong. It was 85* yesterday so I pulled out some prosthetics and went as a zombie again. I'm getting pretty good at making myself look dead.

The fact that kids receive candy and junk food habitually throughout the calendar year no longer makes the holiday as rewarding or appealing as with past generations.

I think people have just become jaded. There's hardly any enthusiasm about anything anymore.
It's not just Halloween. It's pretty much everything.
I believe it's just that the spirit of any particular event gets drowned out by the noise. There's so much out there competing for our attention - that it's easy to see how people aren't as community oriented as they once were. Everyone is wrapped up in their own little world.
I guess I'm saying that it seemed like people were more hive-minded in the past. They shopped locally, they dressed the same, ate the same foods, watched the same programs on television, went to local fairs and events.
Now it seems like a gargantuan effort just to get people to leave their homes.
Totally depressing, but it's the truth.

All the hot skanky girls on my page growing up and now parading their kids around instead of their slutty costumes is what killed Halloween. Yea I'm mad.
