I know someone who married a hedge fund manager. He made all his money during their marriage, he cheated, they divorced, she got half. She's now worth north of $3 billion.

What are we up to now?

20 billionaires?

By the end of the weekend I bet we can get to 10% of US billionaires.

Most people are probably overestimating what the people they know are actually worth. I thought I knew people who were pretty wealthy, then I started working in wealth management, and now I know that most of the LA guys I know have peanuts in comparison.

A life long friend of mine is an attorney. Brilliant guy, graduated in the top 5 of his class at Tulane. He is a founding partner in a law firm, but he personally only has one client. They pay him $65,000 a month retainer plus expenses. But the kind of law he practices is in a niche area and he is recognized as an expert in that small, narrow field.

The two part-owners of the dealership I work at, who are also the GMs of our two new car stores. I don’t know exactly how much they make, per se, but my dealership is a $30m-ish per year business and they pretty much do/buy whatever they want, whenever they want to, so I know they’re rolling in it.

Friend of mine from high school started a landscaping business. There was a farm that the bank owned, he wanted so he went and bought it from the bank. They figured he would lose it eventually and they would just make some money while they held it. This was prime hunting land.

3 yrs later he was still making payments and the natural gas boom hit Arkansas.

I was told by a family member of his that he was drawing 90k a month in royalties when prices were high a few years ago off that plot of land. He now owns a ton more land and company that builds hunting blinds.

He's 97. WWII bomber pilot. Bought a shitload of property in Houston after the war and started his only business selling pipe to damn near every oil company in the world. Has told me stories about his trips to Iran before the Ayatollah took over. He's also my wife's grandfather.

Good friend I met 2 years ago who I mistakenly thought was a sales rep for a company we did business with to later find out he was the owner. We hit it off great that day. He invited me fishing on his new boat and I started to learn his story.

Over 2 years, I have determined the guy is damn near a billionaire of not already one. I have never asked but he is into shite I don’t even understand. On one hand he owns a chemical cleaning solutions company that produce non corrosive solutions for steel mills, mining operations, industrial, etc and as I found out over 2 years, a ton of other shite.

I laugh my arse off when we get together and he mentions some other business venture he is dealing with that I had no clue about. I just found out last month that he is half owner of a 2500 acre hunting lodge that I have been taking clients to for years. Same day I find out that he ships 60k Tom of steel coils to a Sheik in UAE every month. I was like “WTF man! How does one even get to where he is involved with sending steel to a Sheik? How do you get into this kind of stuff?” He will laugh and tell me the story of how it basically fell into his lap and how he almost blew the deal because he thought the offer was a prank being played by a friend. He left this Sheik’s rep ( who happened to be his friend who was married to the Sheiks daughter)hanging for a week with no call back until his friend called and said “wtf, are you going to call him or not? He is pissed that you haven’t called. I have hooked you up and he really needs 60k tons a month.” He said he was like “oh shite, this guy is for real” and made the call to his steel contacts to see if it was doable and then called the Sheik. Sheik told him he would prepay for the order on the 1st of every month for a shipment to leave on the 15th. My friend had to put nothing into this. No capital. No nothing! Just brokered a shipping transaction and printing money off of the markup.

Anyway, he has all kinds of things like this that I don’t even understand when I ask and he tries to explain. Making money like that is foreign to me. I just enjoy flying on his Lear 45 to go to his boats to fish or going to some of his properties. He is taking my family with his this November to the 20 acres he bought and just finished building a mansion on Turks & Caicos, complete with another 1/2 million dollar fishing boat off a private dock. He has 3 36 ft Yellowfins now and an Everglades 26 for good measure.

Weirdest thing is he is the most down to earth wealthy person I have ever known. It is like one of my goofy arse friends from HS who I am still friends with hit the $600 million lottery. I guess he and I just share a very similar sense of humor because we laugh at shite all the time. Guess that’s why he likes to hang out with me because I damn sure have nothing to offer him.
