A buddy met Mike Tyson in a boxing gym post biting off Evander Holyfield's ear. Said he exuded danger.
Funny, I met Tyson many times through friends when he lived in Scottsdale and never got that feeling from him, he was always extremely pleasant (especially if there were women around).
Interesting subject. I've told friends many times there weren't many men I was "afraid" of but there are three that stand out as coming across unhinged and that it was unsettling being around them. One was Roberto Duran. Was in the Bay Area with friends for a Wisconsin/Stanford football game in 1996 and ran into him in the Cadillac Bar & Grill in SF the night before the game. He was drunk and/or coked up and was fine when I spoke with him about his boxing career but other guys kept bugging him for his autograph and he was extremely agitated and wanting to fight. I vividly recall he had snot coming out of his nose and kept wiping it with his sleeve. I'm pretty sure he was solo and had no friends to reign him in and I bailed when it looked like it was getting out of control. I'm pretty sure he would have taken on the whole bar.
I played slo-pitch softball in the late 80's with a Arizona (Phoenix) Cardinal LB named Niko Noga. He was a Samoan with a head the size of a stop sign and when we went out after games he always seemed to find trouble. Two other Cardinal players on the softball team said the whole team was afraid of the guy and they shipped him off to Detroit. I remember he was always wanting to arm wrestle me.
In the early-to-mid 90's I traveled to LV for work quite a bit and boxed at Johnny Tocco's Ringside Gym when visiting. A lot of big-name boxers trained there, including Iran Barkley, who twice beat Tommy Hearns. One night a bunch of us from the gym went to a local nightclub on a weeknight and one-by-one the crowd dissipated until it was just he and I and another. Barkley was truly a crazy person and even the bar security kept their distance. He begged us to stay and continue partying and finally I snuck out. Again, he appeared under the influence of drugs. I saw him a few times after that and I kept my distance. He has since fallen on hard times and I believe he is (or was) homeless.

I didn’t necessarily “meet” him, but former UCF champ Chick Liddell walked right through me as if I was not even there. This was at The Rio in Vegas about 25 years ago. My head was turned so I didn’t see who it was. I was about to go give that guy a stern talking to, but my friends told me who it was and I decided to let it go. Didn’t want to embarrass him in front of his friends….actually, I went and crawled under a craps table and started crying.

I have treated some “Lifers” from the lovely institution known as Angola. You could see the evil behind their eyes.

Afghan tribal leader (warlord). Was very humble and courteous, but no telling how many deaths he had ordered. They don't play over there.

Former employer when I was young.
I quit on the spot because he chewed my arse out because I called a black man "sir."
Former WWII intel officer, used to also beat his wife.

There was a dude I went to high school with that was a brawler. Fought people for fun and got a reputation so kids from other schools would seek him out. He always won. A guy I knew got in a fight with him and had a wrench….baw took the wrench from him and then beat him up.
Guy also had a lightning temper and you never knew what would set him off. I’m not a small guy but I kept my distance. Guy became a cop (go figure) and was eventually busted with a local judge for an extortion racket.

Met him while hanging out with friends at a local bar in my twenties. He was with some of my friends’ parents who were there, and seemed like a nice guy. If you shake his hand, you better be ready—dude will crush your hand. Told my dad a day or two later (who grew up around him in the 60s) and he went into high alert, parent-lecture mode. He said 30 years ago, you would’ve been smart to quietly leave if he was around in a bar. I guess Art chilled over time, but my pops was very unsettled.

I met John William King. He was one of the three white men that murdered that black man James Byrd in Jasper, TX.
I was dropping off donated books to the Polunsky Unit one day with my local church. We were invited inside for a tour of the prison. He was being held in the medical area when we went through. We talked for about one minute before being rushed out of there.

Absolute legend off the field. Ran into him working security at the Beau Rivage about 14 years ago. I was very drunk in the night club and stood up on a couch or something. This older gentleman comes up to me and tells me to get down. I’m glad I complied. After I got down, I realized that it was Art Cantrelle that told me to do it. I’m not one to mouth off or give security problems at a place like that anyway, but even in my state and at his age he had a presence that said “don’t frick with this guy.”

Pretty much everyone I dealt with in the Middle East. They didn’t put much value on anyone’s life but theirs and nobody would say anything to them if they felt like shooting you in the middle of the street.
You were real careful with those folks, they liked having that much power and weren’t a bit bashful about showing it.

I’ve got a couple like this in my family.
My 93 year old grandma is a sweetheart, just brutally honest. Go to a sauna and run a couple miles before you go see her lol.
