I do when I'm at my parents house. Mine has a hook and pole, not nearly as gratifying

Been doing it every single time since I could touch it. The one at my new house has a loop to hook

Man, I miss the attic string in my parents old house. Nothing like the sound of whacking that string up to the ceiling.

The day I moved home after graduating from college without a job, I did that to the ceiling fan string. It flew up and wrapped around the axle and took two hours to get it unrwrapped. My dad was not happy
I found employment and moved out within a week.

Used to walk into mine all the time…
I shortened it for that exact reason. My wife can't reach the string now, but she's not going to go into the attic anyway.
ETA: misinterpreted the point of the thread at first, and no, I don't hit the string when I pass it. I did when I was a kid though. It was right in front of my bedroom door in the house I grew up in.

I've got that exact same problem.
Her: 'Just put it in the attic'
Me: 'Have you ever actually seen our fricking attic?!?!"

Two attic entryways (to one huge open attic). One in the garage and and one in the hallway.
I hit them both...
EVERY
SINGLE
TIME!

Does anyone try to hit the string just hard enough where it barely hits the ceiling?
Guilty

You should try the soccer style header. Very satisfying.
My preferred method as well.

Hell yes. Gotta turn it into a game.

everytime to both of the strings in my house
I have also taught my daughter to do it so if I'm carrying her she will always reach to hit the string

Yup
Son picked up the habit as soon as he could jump and reach it.
Bugs the crap out of the wife, which is probably why we do it.

The house I grew up in had an unfinished 2nd story with a staircase in the hallway. I just assumed that EVERY house had that kind of attic access.
I HATE the pull down attic stairs, but I definitely hit the string more times than not. Now our access has a wooden dowel on it, and it's not near as cool
