Cool story dude.
More of a brass and stringed guy myself. Cello and Bass trombone in jazz band and baritone in concert and marching band.
Flute players always. . . blew. . . the best. . . if you know what I mean.

The band at my HS was segregated by sex. Girls played woodwinds, guys were brass and percussion. Except for saxophones, which could be either. And one fabulously gay clarinet guy.
There was no rule about this, it's just the way it worked out.
