I am a Louisiana-born, LSU-educated attorney, soldier teetotaler. While I would describe myself as a lapse Baptist, not a particularly religious reason for the abstinence, either.
Just associated it with negativity in my extended family so I passed. Never looked back. Now, it's an impressive (non) accomplishment. I mean, it's not impressive to be a falling down drunk at any age. But, to be a middle-aged teetotaler with that background and not a devoutly religious person is considered by many to be quite a feat. Probably stubbornness after a certain point. But that's spin, isn't it? Isn't "persistence" a positive character trait?

Meh. Social responsibility. I had a drug fiend go through my cabinets and steal pills one time. This was a friend of my sister and I unwittingly contributed to a relapse.

Don't feel like I've missed out on anything by not doing drugs. Drank enough alcohol to float a ship. Decided to give it up as a New Year's resolution on 12/31/98. Never went back to it. Life it totally different without it. For the better but then again, I'm probably much older than the majority of folks on this site.

I have had my share of experiences with experimenting with drugs and stuff. At this point it all seems pretty hollow. Experiences sober are more rewarding, fulfilling, and productive. I struggle to think of anything really positive that drugs (including alcohol) have given me. That said, to each their own.
