Circa 2001, there was no faster way to find out where the women were at in college.
Text messaging was soon to take over and dominate.

We had them as company phones. I'd forget to disable the radio in a meeting occasionally and one of my buddies would all of the sudden say something like "hey frick face what's up?" I had a few embarrassing moments with those things.

When I would hear two people using the walkie talkie feature to have a conversation with each other I never understood why couldn't they just fricking call each other instead of having everyone around having to hear that noise each time they talked to one another.

we had a guy who would switch over to group mode and fart into it

People who used these, back in the day, are the ones starting threads today about not wanting to hear speakerphone conversations in public.

Had an ole boy in front of me at the grocery store "chirping" one of his buddies, it was beyond cringeworthy

Yeah, I'm not exactly sure what the benefit was supposed to be versus just calling someone.
It's pretty funny that it was a thing

Because it was a hell of a lot cheaper at the time.

If I remember right it didn’t use any of your minutes.

Yep. It was unlimited direct connect with Nextel devices. Back when you actually used all the minutes in a 600 minute shared plan.
Probably changed the way plans laid out as far as carrier to carrier calls

I had the yellow one, then went high tech and got this bitch before the fad died out

from day one up until the discontinued direct connect
the policy was "more than ten words is a phone call"

Had one. But the walkie talkies were the best way to communicate after Katrina with my dad who stayed back while working for Entergy
