Had one. But the walkie talkies were the best way to communicate after Katrina with my dad who stayed back while working for Entergy

It was the only was to communicate. I bought one for my wife as I already had one and they worked fine specifically for that purpose. They were lifesavers for people down there after the storm as your dad knew.

Do I remember right? Couldn’t you turn att service off and communicate back and forth between phones only like a true Walkytalky?

Edit to add, Only if you were close enough for the phones to broadcast and the other close enough to receive the signal. Like 1/2 mile or so.

That ptt was the bomb for work, we used them as a 2-way system. I thought I was shitting in high cotton when I got NEXTEL. Mine would work until about Laurel Hill n. Of BR on the way back and forth to NOLA.

Best invention ever for Any type of LEO or First Responder. They cost a fortune so agencies dumped them.

I was never a LEO, was a private investigator back in the day and it was perfect when working a 2+ man surveillance. Especially considering cell rates.

If I remember right it didn’t use any of your minutes.

This is correct and minutes were a lot more expensive in those days. The two way actually worked okay for our company at the time. You saved your minutes for more important issues, calls to clients, vendors, and subs.

Built custom homes during that period of time.

You would just hope that you didn't leave the damn thing on during a walk through with a client.

Nextel wasn't ATT in any form. Sprint bought them.

I understand that, had Nextel through work and ATT for my personal use in my vehicle.

Nextel direct connect was about the only thing that worked after katrina. Is it even still a feature?
