I plug my iTouch into the MINI for my music. I never connect my phone.

I never use car play and rarely pick up my phone when I drive.
I use hands free for everything through the Ford system. I can use Siri without car play.

It’s really easy, other than sometime Siri might misunderstand a word or two.

I drive a 2017 F150 without Carplay or Android auto. The Bluetooth calling works fine and it will read my text messages ok, but sending a text or trying to call someone with voice commands doesn't seem to work well. My experience is like "call Brandon Jones", the system "ok, calling your ex-girlfriend from 20 years ago"

I have an older truck, but I replaced the stereo with a unit that supports CarPlay and the Android equivalent, backup camera, HD radio, and so on. I love CarPlay and use it phone calls, texts, podcasts/books, weather/radar, and Waze. I will not get another car without it.

For some reason, I can’t get CarPlay to connect to my phone in the wife’s Atlas. I’ve tried to change every setting I can think of, and it’s not happening. Started when I got my iPhone 15

my 2019 doesn’t have car play, but does have handsfree for phones.
but it SUCKS.
the microphone is terrible so whoever your talking to can’t here what you’re saying.
so i almost always end up having to use my phone on speakerphone instead.
