Makes me think of all the people who fall into grain silos and suffocate under the corn/seed/beans. That's real, and Terrifying.

Don't forget about piranhas. I entered adulthood thoroughly prepared for the risk of being skeletonized by Brazilian river perch.

Also from the 70s, earthquakes where the earth actually separates large enough for cars to fall in, drawbridges that aren't down when a car is coming, killer bees, oil embargo and human combustion.

One of the best quicksand scenes came from the vintage TV western “Cheyenne” when an Indian brave challenged Cheyenne to a duel of bravery in a pit of quicksand. But the 5-foot-10 brave quickly learned that Clint Walker was 6-6 and freaked out. I was about 9 or 10 and laughed my arse off.
Also, when I was about 11, I stepped into a muddy construction site on the side of the road and sunk one leg up to my waist and the other to my knee. The suction kept me from crawling out. I hollered out to my buddies but they thought I was faking ... until I started crying.

Acid rain, ozone hole, peak oil... they even pushed an ice age for a while in the 1970s.

Chewed holes in Richard Pryor’s clothes during The Toy, which was filmed in BR.

My first trip to Grand Isle was when I was 13. Went with a buddy and his dad and fotted around in a canoe going from little island to little island. On occasion we'd get out of the canoe and fish from the island. I hooked into a sizable trout and the fight was on. By the time I got the damn fish landed I was knee deep in marsh mud but thought for sure it was quick sand and started freaking out. My buddy's dad couldn't help me because he was on the floor of the canoe cracking up. I had to fight like hell to get out. Lost my shoes and my socks in that muck. Somewhere out in Grand Isle are a bad arse pair of size 11 air max's. Explaining that to my mom went over like a fot in church.

Yes, I often thought about quicksand when fishing the Mississippi River and the batture area Behind the levee.
It weighed heavily on my mind when the sand was soft That and vampires were scary

I’ve never seen or heard the John Mulaney skit.
Fwiw I find that pretty believable. The skit is funny because people can relate.

Quicksand was one of my great childhood fears. Not positive but I think it was on an episode of Duke's of Hazzard I saw as a young kid.

For a while as a kid, I worried Skylab might fall on my house.

Godzilla or some assorted T-Rex stomping my neighborhood was a recurring nightmare. And that was pre-Jurassic Park.
