Intelligence is a tough thing to quantify. Plus you have to take into consideration the goals of each individual. Not everyone is driven to work hard enough to own a yacht. Lots of very intelligent guys value their free time much more than making a couple of extra bucks. They'd rather coach teeball than fly across the country to close a deal.
I really like this TED Talk that approaches the equation of intelligence in a new way: LINK
It basically just says that the most intelligent people give themselves the most options in any situation, similar to a chess player. Well worth the couple of minutes to listen to.

Not everyone with high intelligence just tries to get rich, which makes the comparison flawed.
This - I know people that make a lot of money delivering goods and services to companies and others that make a fraction of that delivering food, supplies and services to poor and homeless people that do a great job as well.
Which is the higher calling ?

When comparing penis size, is IQ more important than bank balance?
Regardless, A will always work for B.

I feel that someone's personality type can tell a lot about their intelligence.

Spinoff: who is "smarter"?
Steve Jobs the computer programmer who created Apple software?
Or
Steve Jobs the CEO who led Apple to be the top company in the entire world?
I myself have to go with Steve Jobs the CEO

Steve Jobs didn't create the apple software or program baw. But I would say the ones who did are smarter IMO

As most people have said, I think it's something that's damn near impossible to quantify.... But given the information we have to work with and let's say I'm a world leader that has been warned that we are on the brink of an extinction level event, and I have 1 spot left in my safety pod, I'd probably choose A over B to come with me and hopefully rebuild the future.

It is impossible to say based on the info in your scenario.

You can be a buffoon in some ways and be very successful in either business or academia. There are a lot of different types of intelligence.

quote:Well it's impossible to infer a comparative level of intelligence from this information. In all likelihood both are intelligent.
I had a discussion with my BIL about this yesterday and his point was that A was just very good in school and effectively still does that same type problem solving everyday. B has shown his intelligence by making tons of money and traveling the Americas on his sport fishing yacht, and that A would never be hired to really run anything because, well...he just isn't intelligent enough to
And between yourself, your BIL, and the two indivduals, your BIL is the only one who has displayed poor reasoning skills as evidenced by his poor generalizations.

You don't have to be educated to be intelligent.
You don't have to be intelligent to be educated.
Intelligence is genetic. People confuse intelligence with achievement, though they are not the same.

Knowing someone's profession is not enough information for me to accurately guess how intelligent they are. I will say that there's fewer dumbasses with advanced science degrees than there are dumbass business owners. There's just too many other factors at play here that determines one's success, especially in business.
Did they have wealthy parents? Did they have GOOD parents? Did they go to a good school? Did they inherit money? What did their parents do? Were they in a fraternity? What did their friends wind up doing? Those are a few just to start with..
By the way, do you really think you made some point by saying that the Oceanographer wouldn't be hired to run anything? That's kind of a blanket statement, but do you think a business owner would get hired as a scientist?

Intelligence is a definition, one which most people don't know. The most common use of the word is in a sentence like "that wasn't a very intelligent thing to do", which leads to the misconception.
Intelligence is simply a capacity to learn and apply knowledge, and a person's intelligence can't be determined from some isolated incident, although that's how it's most commonly used in conversation.
An intelligent business owner may have a completely different set of mental skills than an intelligent scientist. Intelligence covers so many topics such as common sense, problem solving, and academic understanding that it's nearly impossible to determine who is more intelligent overall. I've met so many people in my life who can spout off about some academic topic for hours yet they can't even tie their shoes properly and vice-versa.

Awe of success is different than admiration of intelligence. The CEO (BTW that title when self awarded from a sole proprietorship tends to lose some pizazz, but I digress). Inherent intelligence is both easily quantifiable and rare. However, success can be obtained in many forms. For example, you can be very successful with just good people skills and a willingness to F people over.
