For the sake of the argument we're assuming neither could do each other's job. The CEO just wasn't as book smart and the Oceanographer just simply doesn't have the people skills and gravitas of the CEO.
Oceanographer is smarter objectively IMO, however the CEO is much more fun to be around and success USUALLY comes to those who shake the right hands, not who gets the best grades.

Well I know both of these people. They were specific examples, one out of my peer group and one from my BILs. The oceanographer is very socially awkward and I was telling my BIL that he's unquestionably intelligent. His point was that no in fact he's not. He use an example of a person he thought was unquestionably intelligent that I've met before. Hence the thread.

I think an eidetic memory would make you a genius automatically, no?
They literally remember everything...

Intelligence and success are two totally different things and aren't exclusive to either

Success doesn't always equal raw intelligence.
There's a lot of luck and a lot of relationships that can lead to success for really stupid people. Also, I know some stupid rich people that hired really smart people to run their companies. The action of hiring might be somewhat intelligent, but its really common sense.

Different types of skills/intelligence completely. Both successes.
You're asking for a binary answer on something that I'd equate to a 3D spectrum.

it would be smarter if he stuck to just the oceans

Is intelligence memorizing stuff or applying information to solving problems? I say the latter, and it's impossible to know based on the OP

He was just referencing a mentor of his and how he equates how the man conducts himself and the decisions he makes with intelligence. Even if he lost it all tomorrow, the intelligence it took to build it would still be there and he could build it all again.

I'd say an oceanographer has to be quite good at applying information learned.
I'm thinking the oceanographer also did far better on standardized tests and IQ tests than the CEO, but that's just a guess.

Agree.

Yes and no. They may not be able to accomplish children's levels of problem solving if it is not in their databanks. Some with an Eidetic memory may be smarter than others based on genetics. Environment and exposure are helpful.

Who's happier?
Which one has a better quality of life?
Who has more control over their situation?
Which task will leave them better off physically upon retirement?
Many questions, subjective answers to some, some unanswerable.
I'm happy where I am, control matters to me, I could make more money somewhere else but I wouldn't have the security and control that I now have.
I make enough where I now am.

You and your BIL need to come to a common definition of intelligence to even begin to evaluate this. Good luck, you guys seem miles apart on that.
Posted on 6/7/16 at 3:03 pm to Gaston
Intelligence comes in many different facets.

Who do you think is more intelligent?
Oceanographer who graduated high school a year early, 4.0s through science and applied science degrees, and works for the government mapping the ocean floor all over the world.
B) CEO of a company that owns 6 very successful restaurants as well as other land and business ventures.
The one that got his wife to sign the pre-nup

Success is different for everybody. Just because "success" to you means making lots of money doesn't mean that's how other people define it.

So what? If someone is socially awkward that means they're not intelligent? That's a big load of horseshite.

I was telling my BIL that he's unquestionably intelligent.
You're probably correct

His point was that no in fact he's not.
Because he's not rich? That has to be the most shallow measure I've ever heard of for determining if someone is intelligent or not.

A. Smart people don't open restaurants.
