Who actually cares how much a gallon of gas cost?

Who here actually looks at the price of gas when they fill up?
I couldn’t tell you the last time I checked how much gas cost. It’s a necessity. I have to have it to go to work to make money so it’s basically a sunk cost.
I mean do people ever get to a price point where they are just like “nope, shut it down. Not driving anymore till prices fall”?
Have you ever heard someone say “ well I can’t afford to pick up some steaks for the grill tonight cause gas at the pumps is too high”?
I guess a lot of people live paycheck to paycheck...

Asking once wasn’t enough?

Average American Household income is a little under 55k.

So hypothetically if gas went to $5/gal, would that household decide not to drive to work? Makes zero sense..

I want to open a gas station by your house.
"East Coast Band's Gas Station"
$6.00/ gallon

Well no, but they may decide not to drive across town to their favorite restaurant or to the movies. This isn't that hard, seriously are you just retarded?

How so? Have you ever personally not done something because of what the price of gas was?

Everyone likes to use that talking point, but you probably don’t know one person that has actually done that.

No but I don't make $12/hour either. This is simple economics, of course prices affect consumer behavior, especially prices of commodities.

Well lets do some math real quick:
@ $5 a gal and the average fuel tank roughly 15 to 16 gallons, would yield a cost of 75 to 80 dollars per fill up. On the high end, this person fills up 4 times a month, low end 2 times, times two (two vehicles), would yield a cost of 600 to 640 dollars a month (high end).
Over the course of the year (12 months) this would have an implied cost of 7200 to 7680 per year.
LINK
Total net pay for 55k in La is 43.8k.
Subtract 7-8k and that leaves the family with roughly 35.8k or 1376 dollars bi-weekly to handle everything else.

I understand some high schooler who has to spot gas to make it home from his job at Burger King.
But your average American is what I’m talking about.

I understand the math.... but that won’t stop them from going to the movies or making sure they have an iPhone.
Even if they have to live on credit, consumer habits would not be affected.

I know, and you're re an idiot if you think the average American doesn't take gas prices into their decision making process. As someone told you above, average household income is 55k so if they have to spend an extra couple of thousand dollars on gas because prices are higher, yes it will affect what they do.
This is seriously economics 099, it's not even 101.

He is also not realizing that commercial companies will pass down their increase in fuel cost to the customer via product pricing.

You must not understand how this works?? You do realize that gas over 3 dollars a gallon begins to affect many prices other than just Gas at the pump. Airlines begin to charge more for tickets, food prices begin begin going up do to transporting the items...etc.. Sure we have to pay it no matter what the price but the average family will begin feeling it everywhere else as well.

Let’s say this same family booked a beach trip to 30-A last October.
Now let’s say some crazy shite went down in Iran and caused gas prices to soar to $5 a gallon in a weeks time.
Would that family cancel their trip because the price of gas would cost them an extra $200 to get there?
No because no matter what their vehicle doesn’t run without fuel. So they will pay it and go on their trip.
