My suv burned through tires.. I am not a rough driver.. But my suv has had 3 sets on it with 80,000 miles. 1st was Bridgestone potenza.. 2nd Yokohama 3rd Hankook... Hankook so far seem to be the best. I got the last two from Tire Rack, The Bridgestone came with the car..

Michelin

You have so much riding on your tires.

But seriously... Michelin

There are plenty of good ones and no single brand is superior across the board. My preferences:

Nitto for A/T tires - I've had Terra Grapplers on every truck or SUV I've owned.
Michelin for all purpose street/track and performance - Using a set of Pilot Sport Cup 2s for getting around town.
Toyo for trips to Mexico - R888R is a beast on the street.
Mickey Thompson for the drag strip - I've been a fan of their radials since the first iterations years ago.

Pirelli’s on my Merc
Michelin’s on my Lexus

Very happy with both sets of tires

Tires are tires within their class.

Life would be slightly easier if that were true. Also, don't put too much emphasis on a tires UTQG number especially when comparing tires from one manufacturer to another.

I will NEVER buy Yokohama tires again. By far the worst tires I've ever had. Zero traction whatsoever.

Currently I'm riding on Firestone Firehawks for my V8 coupe. It's what came on the car when I bought it and I'll continue to buy them. I've put them through hell and a couple unusual situations and they've just been super reliable.

but what do you need out of a tire - Z rating, run flat, track like handling or just a general tire, etc.

Mainly to make it from south louisiana across the country to Oregon, and then once there be able to handle the weather conditions ofbthe PNW.

Planning a long drive in a car that probably needed new tires a year ago. Its been sitting up, I've missed it and plan to just drive back after flying in and surprising family for Christmas.

I figure all tires need to be replaced, but thats one subject I've never really srudied.

I've had really good luck with the nothing-spectacular Goodyear Wrangler DuraTracs on my last two Silverados. No problems- never even had a flat riding with them. And they handle themselves well, in off-road use.

Having said that, Goodyear needs to keep out of politics.

First hand experience: goodyear is awful. Had to replace at 30,000 miles. Buddy had the same exact tires and had the same problem.

I always buy Michelin. My new SUV came with Continentals and they’ve also been good—caveat that I’ve not driven much this year. No need to skimp on the only 4 patches I want touching the ground.

But what kind of sedan do you have with a V8???

There are a few modern ones. Charger, 300, several cars from the German firms, Jaguar....does the big Lincoln sedan offer a V8?

The problem is having a vehicle that requires Z rated tires. Jesus do those things wear out fast. I actually switched to Pirellis because they have over double the treadwear rating. So far they are working out well.

ETA: Having an odd size doesn't help and pretty much limits your choices to the $$$$$ tires.
