Wolves.

Nothing could survive a pack of wolves. I’m not talking about coyotes or foxes I’m talking about full grown wolves.

No doubt primates will eventually rule. After all, humans were originally in the state that chimps are today.
It might take 50,000 years though.

Wolves. No question. And Orcas would remain on top of theirs.

The fact that it took 3 pages for wolves to be brought up is ridiculous. They are mankind’s oldest and most well understood enemy outside of disease. You get rid of man, and they’ll take over North America, Asia, and Europe quickly within a few thousand years. Wolves think like humans and are thus notoriously difficult to hunt.

In the US....Wolves.

A full pack of wolves trumps everything.

They kill wolverines and their numbers can make bears back down.

There would be no #1 globally, it would be different answer in different locales. Some places it would be the tiger, in others the crocodile, some the gorilla etc. Nature would continue operating largely just like it does now.

I agree with this.

Someone else mentioned extinctions. If anything humans have artificially slowed those. They are part of evolution, overall something over 99% of all species are extinct (i think).

I have often wondered and a couple of times commented on how the morning traffic would sound if we weren't at the top of the food chain.

"Well a couple of people got eaten in spaghetti junction with the backup to MacArthur..."

Nature is a lot more brutal than we are. A huge percentage of everything gets eaten by something else, frequently while being alive.

Basically everywhere with a 30 degree Northern Latitude or above will be dominated by wolves. They’re not big fans of tigers and bears, but they can overwhelm their ecosystems as a unit. People are really underestimating the wolf here. The question is what will take humanities place in Africa (safe guess being the Lion), Australia, and South America.

Roaches and ants would be the ultimate survivors in the animal kingdom. As for mammals and the food chain, which species dominated pre-human?

Maybe a new species evolves. Evidence suggests no other species on earth can or has developed technology. Some use tools but advanced concepts elude them.

The opposable thumb and big brain rules. Current primates simply have evolved far enough yet.

Ursids with sentience would be pretty cool to see.

Not sure if solitary animals would end up at the top.

There is not one single species that would move to the top of the food chain due to geographics.

Ants will one day look at the Pyramids and wonder how primitive ants were able to build them.
