I never realized marines were special ops in and of themselves.

I was in the 88th Dragon Squadron of the USAMNSHU, and all I can say is Marines desperately tried to crack into it but could never get past Phase 2 of SIBT.

SF and SEALS have completely different missions. SF's main mission is to raise a guerrilla army of locals in whatever country they're operating.

You are correct....however, ranger school is just as you said, a leadership course for the Army and AF. In order to be selected to serve in one of the Army's Ranger battalions you must pass Ranger Indoc Program, or now called RASP (Ranger Assesment and Selecion Program). These are two totally different entities. Ranger school is much easier.

I haven't done either, but I've heard the complete opposite.

Guess it depends on who you ask. I guess it seemed that way because once you get to Regiment they PT the shot out of you so much by the time you go to Ranger school it is much less difficult. Don't know if someone you spoke to was from the regular Army or AF but yes, coming from a regular unit I'm sure it's much tougher. Regiment is a different world however from the regular Army.

I'm seeing a lot of well intentioned ignorance in here with a few that knows something about special ops.
Beware of people that combine one branch with the other.

I've talked to Marines that went through and they've talked to Regiment guys that went through and I have a buddy who was an instructor at Ranger school. The Marines I know say it's the best training they ever had. The instructor buddy says that guys from the regiment pass at a much higher rate because the regiment has spent years bringing them up to Ranger school standard before they even go but if you took a guy off the street he'd have a much easier time passing RASP over Ranger school.

I was with the Green Berets,
Special Unit Battalions...
Commando Airborne Tactics...
Specialist Tactics Unit Battalion.
Yeah, it was real hush hush.
I was Agent Orange,
Special Agent Orange, that was me.

I don't know when they went through (what RIP class) but my experience was that initial Indoc was tougher training. Ranger school is not easy, but as I said, serving in Regiment prior made my Ranger school experience less harsh. Your buddies may have a different opinion. Mine is a first hand experience so TIFWIW

It's difficult to say which is toughest as it mainly depends on the individual. Those that make it through do not usually feel that it was all that tough. Those that fail usually do.
I made it through Ranger training and CAG selection and, while it was mentally and physically taxing, it wasn't impossible. If you are physically and mentally fit, you should succeed. If you aren't, then you certainly will not.
