half the floats were out of beads by south college
I had the kids and stuff around Bisbanos and we got absolutely drenched with beads. I was thinking "how much do they carry on that float"
It was perfect for me because of ease with family. Didnt pay attention to the actual size, was damn happy it was over!

As far as bringing kids, Metairie is pretty solid. Huge floats and they throw heavy

I hear Basile has a real old school/traditional parade
Can confirm.
I grew up running Mardi Gras in Basile it was great.
If you were 13+ and your parents signed the back of the card you could drink alcohol with the grown ups.
Since it started at 5:30 in the morning by the time we hit town in the afternoon me and my buddies were some pie-eyed nickel begging mofos;

Houma has to easily be the second biggest in the state.
This past weekend we had:
Firday night - Hercules
Sat night - Acquarius
Sunday - Hyacinthians & Titans
This coming week we have the following :
Friday- Aphrodite
Sat- Krewe of Mardi Gras on east side
Sunday - Terreanians
Monday - Cleopatra
Tuesday - Houmas with krewe of Cajuns following
Kids have off the whole week as well.

I think as with any parade, opinions can vary depending in where you're located along the route.
However, many floats in Rio this year did seem half-empty, and the riders often were more concerned with drinking than throwing.
I'm not in Rio, so I'm not sure if this is totally true, but I think Rio is falling victim to the "commercialization" of Mardi Gras. By that I mean that it was started by people that broke off of Bonaparte for whatever reason and it doesn't have the membership to support the big parade it wants to throw. I think many members invite out of town friends or business acquaintances to ride in the parade, and most of these people don't harbor the passion for Mardi Gras that locals do, so they don't ride fully prepared. The result is half-hearted throwing and more drinking in the parade.
That being said, I did see some awesome stuff at my spot on the route (Bayou State Pawn Shop on Johnston St.), like riders throwing entire stacks of cups, slinging 30 or 40 frisbees at a time across the crowd, heaving piles of beads on kids, and giving out quality throws like spears and stuffed animals.
I think any parade can be amazing or a let down for any one person, it's all subjective.
...but srsly, Bonaparte is the best parade in Lafayette.

I have a question. I grew up in SWLA and would like to know the history behind Mardi Gras throws and throws at parades in New Orleans in general?
Growing up as a kid in SWLA, parades throughout the year were a good chance to stock up on candy, the most coveted throw in my eyes back then.
Why don't any parades at any time of the year in New Orleans throw candy? Is this just a SWLA thing?
I never saw the big deal in catching coconuts, or women's heels. Most of these items will just collect dust. Cups and candy are useful and have always been my favorite.
Any insight on this? not really bashing the way Nola does its parades, I just was shocked to see no candy whenever I went to my first parade as a Nola resident.

Just came here to say Houma. To be more specific the old That Stanley Parking Lot.
Lol! Yeah, if you want to get shot. Though that area and terrebonne high are great places to launch footballs and watch the scatter/fighting
