re: Which is more abused: service animal or "my kid is autistic/on the spectrum"?

Ah. My apologies.
Consider that the preschool and your in-laws are the ones that prompted “unnecessary” screenings. These specialists didn’t show up at the daycare to cash in on mandatory autism screenings.
If you have private insurance, the kids’ pediatrician probably agreed to the referrals. They do not make any money for that. They will usually just write down the specialist needed and a few names they feel could help. Pediatricians are underpaid and under appreciated physicians.
Pardon the expression, but I think the internet makes some mothers and family members go full retard. Some well-meaning people think kids are either totally perfect, or the DSM has a name for their child’s every difference or perceived delay.
Good luck to you and your family.

Those autistic kids could probably benefit from a service animal

True service dogs are amazing to watch work but this emotional support dog shite has to stop. It’s basically a work around for people who can’t afford to pay a pet deposit or board their dog.

Not that I agree with it, but many of the service animals you see are emotional support animals. You're not necessarily going to be able to tell by looking at the dog if it's providing a service. Lots of people with anxiety issues have trouble flying and the animals can calm them.
That being said, I think emotional support animals are bullshite but I'm not the one that makes that decision.

They probably aren't autistic. They're probably just retarded like their father.

I mean, I'm glad it worked out for you but would you rather them ignore these warning signs?

I personally think these pediatricians were fueled by the insane amount of medical billing they can charge with kids who are diagnosed as autistic.
Problem with your logic is that pediatricians generally cannot bill DSM codes and get paid by insurance companies - only mental health providers can do that.
But keep looking under that rock for a hidden motive.

As the father of an autistic 11-year old son, my wife and I get a lot of new parents coming up to us asking how we knew and looking for advice about their 2 year old who might be delayed. I think there may be an over diagnosis of Aspergers, and it’s a bit of a shame that Aspergers is lumped in with full-fledged autism. It does neither group any favors, as kids with Aspergers are capable of becoming well-adjusted adults. Many if not most autistic people will need caretakers the rest of their lives.
Our son will live with us as long as we are capable of taking care of him, he will never be able to drive, etc. I don’t know many autism parents who flaunt it. Having to dress your 30-year old son or daughter every morning can become a source of resentment for many parents. Autism ain’t the new ADD I can assure you.

Is your son verbal? We have a 18 year old Autistic son who is very verbal but behind. He was diagnosed when he was 6. Took some doing but we ended up at the Marcus Institute with him
At 18, he is like a 8 year old mentally. Like you, we will take care of him as long as we both live and he will never drive, marry or live on his own.
Anyone who things Autism is the new ADD is just a fool. No parent wants a Autistic child. It is for life

Who the frick cares? Did you lose a seat to a service animal? Is your kid autistic? Do you suffer personal loss from the use of either one? Then mind your business.

Yea he is verbal thank god but he doesn’t enjoy socializing as it takes a lot of work and is very mentally tasking for him.
Biggest problem for us is behavioral. We have the outbursts. Gets really overwhelmed if something is off schedule or different. He’s a math whiz tho!

A pediatrician wouldn't diagnose your child with autism. A pediatrician would refer you to a specialist who would put your child through various evaluations before handing out a diagnosis. Contrary to popular belief, doctors don't just throw out official autism diagnosis like they're nothing.

This is correct. Pediatricians rarely diagnose children with Autism.

Sounds similar to our son. He is very verbal, does not have the outburst though. He stays to himself and is like your son with the schedule. He gets over things pretty fast though. When something doesn't go his way, he rarely has a issue with it more than a few mins.
I have noticed from the age of 14-18 that he seems to be less social but he doesn't have a issue being around people. He would just rather do his own thing in his own time. Electronics stem him pretty good and he is limited on the use of a computer or TV. When he gets on a subject, he wears us out on it for months till he moves on to something else.

OP's pediatrician was probably just trying to steer his kids to some speech therapy or OT. He probably could have qualified for very beneficial pre-K programs, too. However, he let his pride get in the way.

Let me preface this by saying I have a first cousin who is autistic. He is not on the "spectrum" but is fully autistic. He was diagnosed pre-Rainman when the majority of folks had never even heard of the term.
The expansion of the diagnosis of what is on the "spectrum" is the problem as it can pick up the most minor of hitches. Some of these condition MIGHT be better off without intervention. They have grouped together conditions that would be akin to grouping indigestion with stomach cancer. One thing this has done is spread resources too thin for the folks that truly need intense services to better their lives.
This next comment will get blowback and I could care less. There are parents that wear a spectrum diagnosis as if it IS their identity. They have children on the end of the spectrum yet in person and on social media it appears as if this is the ONLY thing that identifies their child and that DISGUSTS ME. Parents have no right to establish that identity for a child and to harp on to a point where even the child sees themself as a victim to be pitied rather than just someone with a condition they can overcome.
I would add that spectrum diagnosis can easily be wrong if dealing with a child who may simply be perhaps a late talker or an introvert. It can also be faked. Often, with folks who do a lousy job being a parent who also happen to be the kind of folks who would do such just to get the SSA check they need do nothing. If one did not properly care for and nurture an infant (Don't hold them, don't provide proper nutrition, don't assist in development by doing things like playing on the floor or reading to them) they could develop Pervasive Developmental Disorder which is now clumped into the spectrum.

Bc they put Aspergers with autistic now. It’s ridiculous bc Aspergers is just a gap between social and learning skills.

Aspergers as it presents can be merely a hitch for many people. For other who may simply be introverts the intervention may make their symptoms worse.
