Slight spinoff from 2 recent threads.

The sheer number of service dogs that AREN'T providing an actual service along with the number of kids who are autistic has skyrocketed in recent years.

As a father of 3, I've had doctors try to diagnose 2 of my kids on the spectrum of autism before the age of 5. I faught them hard against it because they were simply shy or developing faster/slower at certain metrics. And now, low & behold, all over the age of 5 & in school-they are fully functioning normal non-spectrum rated children. I personally think these pediatricians were fueled by the insane amount of medical billing they can charge with kids who are diagnosed as autistic.

ETA: in my 1st grader's class of 25 this year, we apparently had to be informed that 8 kids are autistic/on the spectrum. I have been talking to friends & neighbors about the new school year for their kids & they too are noticing a massive uptick in "autism awareness" in their schools.

Full grown "adults" with these designer breed dogs as service animals absolutely pisses me off. Just fricking live life as a dog owner. Follow the rules of travel or public dog allowances. You don't need your precious pupper while getting fat or schmammered in public at restaurants & bars.

Which doea the OT feel is more abused?

As someone with an autistic dog I can’t believe you would start such a hurtful thread.

Especially on National Dog Day.

I’m glad Carlos can’t read.

They don’t go around just handing out autism diagnoses. Maybe ADHD or ADD but autism has multiple boxes to check and it’s serious.

I’m guessing OPs pediatrician tried to recommend the kids to speech and OT for further evaluation with the possibility of Autism. And OP ran with that.

Most of these kids don’t have Autism but have characteristics that are often seen in Autism. So the mom blogger type runs with this and labels their developmentally delayed, non-autistic kid as autistic.

I encountered a man with a service dog at the airport today. He sat next to me and the dog walked right up to me and started sniffing my hand/leaning on me. I pet his head, then realized people are weird about that, and asked the guy if it's OK to pet him.

His response was, "Thank you, yes" with a little sigh before and emphasis on the thank you. I inferred that he was indeed one of those people who want you to ask first, but then I started thinking about how his dog was the one who came up to me. I assume this dude wanted people to dodge his dog's attention seeking advances long enough to be granted permission to acknowledge and pet the damn thing.

I don't really encounter people leveraging their kids' autism, so by default, I guess my answer is service animals.

I edited my OP.

I'm purely curious to see what the OT is experiencing to compare/contrast.

But if you haven't been around a kid who is "autistic" as told to you by his parents, when really he's just a misbehaving little shite who hasn't had a good spanking, then you either have perfect friends or you don't get out much. Because those kinds of people are easy to find, without even having to look.

Bullsh*t.

Think about it. The pediatrician doesn’t profit off of an autism diagnosis. An autistic child will be referred to specialists and occupational therapists. And I promise you that if your kid has Medicaid, your pediatrician is not getting paid properly for the time spent with your non autistic booger eaters.

It is interesting this is a pervasive issue with kids without any real red flags. Is Mom over analyzing, anxious, feeling guilty, pressuring the pediatrician?

I fully consider we had a shitty run of docs trying to diagnose our kids for their own $$$ gain.

Apologies, I was lumping all the docs in as "pediatricians". There were specialists & regular family ped docs.

And no Medicaid here. We're good tax paying, full time career having Republicans.

I don't think my wife was over worrying or pushing. We more or less went thru the appointments to "make sure" but also satisfy the opinions of preschool admins/teachers & others (mainly the in-laws...) who felt something might be "wrong".

Are you sure you don't mean ADD?

I know a few people who have autistic children, but they don't talk much about it, and you don't really have to be told to know.

But I don't get out much either, so

The wording used at Open House was "on the autism spectrum". So, maybe they're grouping in ADD/ADHD?

Huh, interesting.

I don't talk to other parents at the back to school nights, so maybe I missed it.

I thought my oldest kid's teacher was on the spectrum, but it turns out she's just and Aggy.

Your kid(s) were likely developmentally delayed. A lot of kids, like yours, are just slower at doing things and become perfectly normal.

Many would be hindered by the delay well beyond their toddler years and that’s why Therapy is recommended.

A small portion of these delays are autisim-related. Something is wrong if 8 of the 25 are diagnosed as Autistic.

The latter two are why it’s precautionary to have any developmentally delayed kid evaluated.

They’re probably referring to Aspergers which includes very high functioning members to completely nonverbal members. It’s a big spectrum, and you should probably do some research before you start insulting people who are living with it everyday.
