Yeah that’s why it’s ridiculous. Poor social skills or being an introvert aren’t disabilities but now you raise a kid thinking something is wrong with them

And some parents with a child who has been diagnosed on the spectrum will present that as the only distinction of the child. And then use it for an excuse for a poorly-disciplined child.

Every child that isn’t a beautiful social butterfly is autistic now

I do not know about that but a parent who convinces themself can easily doctor shop to get a spectrum diagnosis if they go to enough doctors.

I don’t know what kind of parent wouldn’t fight an autism diagnosis. But OP has no idea what’s he’s talking about. If docs are considering an autism diagnosis, there’s good reason. Blogger moms don’t view autism as something to brag about.

Are your not aware you placed your kids in a special school? Because that's the only way over 30% of their class would be autistic.

I don't know whats worse, running to the internet for attention or making up fake autism stats to get it

I would agree. Even the most aggressive of folks in diagnosing spectrum disorders would shake their head at over 30%. Do they live next to a lead mine?

I’m guessing OPs pediatrician tried to recommend the kids to speech and OT for further evaluation with the possibility of Autism. And OP ran with that.

Most of these kids don’t have Autism but have characteristics that are often seen in Autism. So the mom blogger type runs with this and labels their developmentally delayed, non-autistic kid as autistic.

Thank you.
You cleared up what I was trying to get across. Which I was doing poorly.

To any poster/lurker took what I asked AGAINST actual truly autistic children, then you didn't get my point & for my part in that-I apologize.

Anaximander hit the nail on the head about these moms who:
quote:

wear a spectrum diagnosis as if it IS their identity. They have children on the end of the spectrum yet in person and on social media it appears as if this is the ONLY thing that identifies their child and that DISGUSTS ME.

This is the abuse I was referring to in starting this thread. And thanks to some level headed discussion/responses the idea that ADD/ADHD/aspergers is all most likely lumped in with general talk of "autistic/on the spectrum" right now (correctly or incorrectly as it may be).

And for those that don't think these doctors get PAID to refer or diagnose kids as autistic/add/adhd & make solid $$$ doing so (from the referring doctors, the specialist clinics, etc., then you're as naive as they come. The OVER diagnosed number of kids on pills in this country is all the prood you need. On top of that, would be the opioid crisis in this country. Doctors have made more OT baller money than we will ever know by over prescribing meds instead of actually fixing the problem(s).

The more I read these responses & read more medical journals on the subject since postinf, I'm thinking the school used the terminology incorrectly or did what they thought was best or maybe even some legal CYA of general verbiage.

I mean, it's LA public elementary education. 49th/50th in the U.S. & run predominantly by women...so there's that.

I don't mean to make light of the real work being done re: autism or the real people who struggle with it. But to my uneducated ears, when I hear:

"Our study found that spectrum diagnoses are more common in the children of engineers, professors and scientists, leading to questions about genetic predisposition to both autism and aptitude"

My reaction is:

"So kids of dorks are sometimes kinda nerdy?"

Thomas Sowell's book "The Einstein Syndrome: Bright Children Who Talk Late" gets into why those characteristics that get diagnosed as being on the spectrum are connected to the way their intelligent mind's work.

You are clearly dumb... Pediatricians don't make that much $$$. Something wrong? send them to a specialist.

Every redneck thinks docs just do everything for money, but yet they are the ones that go to them when they sneeze.

Exactly.

This is what I was asking about these "diagnoses" of autism/add/adhd being so wrong & therefore abused. Too many of these kids are jusy shy or developing at a SLIGHTLY slower clip yet these parents (& their doctors) are just running with these labels. It's a scary trend, which I hope is just a trend & will end very soon. Because these kids deserve better.

Everyone is autistic, allergic to gluten or peanuts and needs an emotional support animal.

I agree, I’ve never heard anyone flaunt it or talk about it much at all. I get out a lot and have many friends with kids, including I have 4 kids. I think maybe OP is just making shite up to start a thread.

Blaming pediatricians or assuming they have a profit motive is certainly misguided. Pediatricians, though, will often refer a patient to a specialist for diagnosis if a parent even mentions a spectrum disorder simply for CYA or to prevent a confrontation with the parent they do not want to have. I cannot blame them for this with the arrogant way some parents conduct themselves these days.

Im sorry but that is just not true. You know know of a person or persons that have adopted that thinking but I assure you, people with Autistic kids do not want their kids to be that way.

That is like saying all white people want their kids to hate black people or visa versa.

There are a few people in this thread that understand it as well as a lot of ignorance.
