Yeah I was surprised when I found out Those were projects. They seem much safer and cleaner now.

They’re also not mostly public housing now. They’re more mixed used and much less subsidized.

Public housing I’m pretty sure is almost totally subsidized to the point of being almost free and these new projects have a much higher mix of partially subsidized housing and very little public housing.

They also have market rates in them but I don’t know who would want to live there at market rate.

Desire was probably the most well known but they were all equally bad

Melpomene and Fisher were just as bad or worse than those listed.

Melp and Magnolia were probably the two most dangerous along with Desire

Magnolia produced the most famous rappers and made the most appearances in rap videos

I heard the booms when they demolished the high rise. Was definitely not close enough to see it.

Imagine just sitting there and not getting up to pick up the trash that is on the lawn.

Or a couple of junk cars pulled up to the porch in the courtyard.

the worst was Fischer

Isn't Fischer the one in which the young nurse was raped & murdered back in the 70's? Jo Ellen Smith?

Very surprised this one hasn't been mentioned:

Fischer

Looked that one up. DAMN.

Some notable incidents:

- On Wednesday April 10, 1973 the body of twenty-two year old nursing student, JoEllen Smith, was found near the Fischer Projects, between Atlantic and Socrates Streets. She had been missing since Sunday April 8, 1973. When police found her she was barely clad and had suffered from four gun shot wounds to the head; it also appeared that she had been sexually assaulted. She had entered the community because she had been instructed to aid an elderly patient living within the Fischer Homes.

- On November 9, 1980 Gregory Neupert, a white police officer, was making his rounds, when he was shot in the neck. He was found the next day near the Fischer Projects, in a ditch. The death of this police officer sparked a huge controversy and lead to the raid of the Fischer projects by the New Orleans Police Department. Four people were killed due to the raid and black community members became enraged, claiming that the New Orleans Police Department was out of control and that their raids had become brutal. Later these officers would be remembered as the Algiers 7.

- During the night of August 25, 1987 three children were hurled out of a window from a third story apartment building in the Fischer Projects, resulting in the death of an eight-year-old girl. Claudia McGown, the mother of three children, had been stabbed to death right before her three children were thrown from the window.

If I recall, a lot of it was housing post WW2 for upstart families funded by the government.

We all see how that turned out.

My band mate’s dad was FBI and he may have been involved with this. He told us several stories about Fischer. Too long ago so I don’t remember most details but I recall him talking about a raid.

Had a friend in high school that lived off Franklin Ave. They would come out of Fischer at night and steal everything, even plants.

Why would they travel all that way?? They were probably from Desire.

The Lafitte wasn’t too bad - not even in the 90s

Good thing those piece of shits don't even exist anymore...

They were built in the 40's and were pretty nice at one time... and many white families lived there including Al Copeland...

Sounds like they were intended to be temporary for young adults.

Yes, it does. There is a Franklin Avenue in Gretna, which is very close to where Fischer was.
