And how did New Orleans end up with so many of these soviet-style housing projects in the mid/late 20th century?

Some photos of the larger ones:

Supposedly they were collapsing and sinking into the swamp before they were done with construction.

The entire concept of these housing projects are just fascinating to me. What the hell were they thinking?

The structures are gone, but the government housing persists in new construction multi-family houses that look something like the Cottages in Baton Rouge (or whatever it's called now).

That's the kind of crap the progressives came up with at the time.

Some of the worst might have been in St. Louis:

Literally designed by the same Japanese architecture firm that designs prisons. And the WTC towers in NYC.

It was for old people and really, really poor families at first. My great grandma lived in one until she was kicked out for having a window fan (1950s).

At first they were really strict, but that went to the wayside in the 1960s.

Magnolia wasn't too bad. My family's maid lived in the Magnolia right where Freret and Louisiana Avenues meet. I went inside her place many times. Also had a couple of beers at The Brown Derby. All during daylight hours.

My parents lived in St. Thomas when I was born. It was a few years after the end of WW2. My dad was in school. My mom said they weren't bad back then. A lot of young couples getting started after the war. I dont think the projects were even very old. Over time they degenerated into ghetto.
