And all they have to do for that fine housing is pull the lever for D’s. It’s worked out sooooo well for them.

It was for old people and really, really poor families at first. My great grandma lived in one until she was kicked out for having a window fan (1950s).

I think they put medical students in Iberville for a while until the late 1960s.

St. Thomas had some great citizens in the early 1990s.

My grandma and grandpa took their engagement pics outside of St. Thomas new buildings bc it looked better than the rentals they lived in. This was 1946

They say the same thing about the new ones they are building to replace the old ones they tore down.

There are still projects in Montgomery and Selma, AL that are at 100% capacity that look just like those pics. Now there are Escalade's and tricked out Caddy's in the parking lots, but the buildings are a damn eyesore from the interstate.

Yeah - but the people that lived in the projects destroyed them. Where my grandparents grew up was just poor.

Pretty soon the ‘new’ ones will be rat infested trap houses as well.

It's incredible that's what they used to look like. They're actually much more attractive looking now and maintained pretty well. I pass by them pretty regularly and you'd think it's really any other development. They were smart to move away from the soviet bloc style housing shown above and move more to town homes and duplexes.

Which one was the area around Felicity and Tchoupitoulas? That one was notorious.

The entire concept of these housing projects are just fascinating to me. What the hell were they thinking?

Aren't most of these a part of FDR's New Deal?

Cottages in Baton Rouge

We had a ton of fun at the OG Cottages pool. It’s quite unfortunate that it has turned into a BR housing project from what I’ve heard.

I do some home health evaluations in the old Calliope Projects location. They're called Marrero Commons now. You never hear of any real issues from that area anymore. I feel much safer going there than I do a lot of other places.

The old projects system didn't work. The new way they run this through HANO isn't so bad. There's a ton of rules/criteria you have to keep up with these days.

My dad was in school. My mom said they weren't bad back then. A lot of young couples getting started after the war. I dont think the projects were even very old

I'm almost positive they were part of the New Deal.

I guess it’s cyclical - at first they were strict, then all hell broke loose - now they’re back to rules again

That’s good if it works

At first they were really strict, but that went to the wayside in the 1960s.

Being strict is racist
