I remember reading this. Why does the whole state get to vote on a city choosing to create their own school system seeing as the public school systems are administered on a parish by parish basis?

The boundaries of the Southeast ISD have already been signed into law. The MFP funding however requires a constitutional amendment which triggers 2/3 vote from both houses and the statewide vote

It’s ok.

They will register 10,000 seniors and 90,000 dead people to the same one bedroom apartment at the least expensive apartment complex in the area.

Luckily, these 10,000 seniors and 90,000 dead people will all early vote. It is the COA’s way to help the community.

You are misinterpreting that law. For one, the St George area currently doesn’t pay ANY municipal/city taxes as they aren’t inside the city.

Secondly, once they become a city, they will not lose their $75K homestead exemption as you claim.

The proposed area of St. George is in the un incorporated area of the Parish. Once it is incorporated it becomes a municipality and the homestead exemption does not apply.

The current property taxes will continue to be assessed at the Parish level, unless a deconsolidation of the City-Parish government happens some time in the future. Central, Baker, and Zachary all still get homestead exemption for their taxes to BREC, EBRSO, EBR Library, etc. The City will be funded by existing sales taxes that are currently being directed to the City-Parish general fund. And per your quote, any future property taxes that are assessed for a St. George School District will also be subject to the exemption.

So...what would happen if st. George goes through, and decides that IT wants to annex some of the places that the BR gov hastily annexed?

I’d like to see that battle

The landowners would have to first request deannexation from BR and then annexation to SG. There are already rumors that landowners in Siegen Village and possibly the Casino are contemplating this, but want to make sure SG is first incorporated before leaving BR

But no one ever discusses that property taxes by law have to go up. The $75,000 homestead exemption does not apply to municipalities. It only applies to un incorporated portions of Parishes.

You are fake news. I live in the middle of a municipality in this state and have the homestead exemption on file at the TA office.

Art VII Section 20.(A)(9) dealing with the Homestead exemption States: (9) This exemption shall not extend to municipal taxes. However, the exemptions shall apply (a) in Orleans Parish, to state, general city, school, levee, and levee district taxes and (b) to any municipal taxes levied for school purposes.

You have it COMPLETELY wrong. All the constitution says is that IF a municipality decides to levy a property tax, THEN the homestead exemption cannot be applied to that PARTICULAR tax.

SG will continue to use the parish property tax assessment.

Oh I can't wait for the scare mailer with this scare tactic from Lipsey/Mathis/Beychok/OneBTR/Together Baton Rouge to hit the mail boxes.

So if St. George can prove itself to be competent, bit by bit annexed chunks of BR could deannex and then request to be annexed by St. George?

LSU had a research farm (where Pennington Biomedical Center is now located) that was outside the city limits when I was a kid. We had all kinds of fun on that property ranging from hunting, fishing, and .

According to the current laws, yes, but they must be contiguous with the SG city boundary.

I know plenty of people over 60 who are for St. George.

Anecdotal at best. The Average age of SG eligible voters is like 54. There are a shite ton of signs for SG at houses of folks well over 60

How long after St George passes do we have to wait until we work on either joining Ascension Parish or starting our own Parish?

I remember the last time St. George tried to establish itself, and "failed" to get the required signatures, and many folks here were making fun of the St. George folks and claiming it would never happen and to just give up. Those posters sure are singing a different tune now.
