Which coastal region of the continental US has the roughest seas?

I initially thought some part of the Pacific - Northern California, maybe, but then I thought that maybe Maine would have a rougher ocean?
Naturally, I assume it isn't the Gulf.
Does anyone know?

Gotya. I've never been to the coastal New England area, but as mentioned, I assumed Portland, Bar Harbor, and such would have rough seas.

They have some dramatic tides, but I don't know about the seas. I would think around Oregon would be pretty rough. Crossing the bar at the Columbia River looks like quite a ride.

I drove the Oregon coast this summer and spent a few hours at Cannon Beach, where a lot of the beach scenes from The Goonies were filmed. Some rough waves and cold water out there.

I’m assuming the coasts that are situated on the windward side of prevailing winds. Since weather systems travel west to East in the northern hemisphere I’m going with the west coast or coastal Hawaii and even the west coast of Alaska. Waves are generally puny in the GOM.

It’s more the size of the oceans that is the factor more than where they strike. Maine’s Coast isn’t rougher because the waves are on average more rough there than in Florida, it’s their geography. The waves are just as rough in Southern California as they are in Oregon.

They have some nasty swells off of Oregon. This one is called Scott’s reef or “the yeti”
That’s a heavy motherfricker.
Northern cal has some big ones too.

It was a question to Ferdinand Magellan who named it “Pacific” because because it was so calm. Ferdinand just did not get a good sample.

Yep! I lived in Cocoa Beach Florida from age 9-14 and that’s where I learned to surf. The pacific kicked my arse the first time I tried to surf out there.
