I lost my job on 9/10/2001. I woke up the morning of the 11th and brewed coffee and broke out the Classified Ads to start the job search. Roommate came home from spending the night at his girlfriends to tell me that the WTC was ‘on fire or something.’ Turned on the TV and I think they were already both burning at that point. The rest of the next 48 was spent glued to the television.

7th grade. Our teacher made the decision, rightfully or wrongfully, to roll in the TV and show us the footage. She also answered a child when they asked why people were jumping. To this day, I have no idea if she made the right decision, but I don't think there was a right decision to be made.

I was in school, but my parents have a great 9/11 story. They were in Amsterdam and were planning on flying home the next day. As they’re walking down the street, they see a lot of people gathered around outside of an open aired pub. When they go up and ask what’s going on, the people turn around and ask if my parents are American to which they say yes. The people then push my parents to the very front of the bar so they can see what’s going on. My mom asked what movie was this and they were told by the bartender that this wasn’t a movie but real life.
My parents stayed at this bar for hours (went back with my dad to drink there a few years later) and people are buying drinks for my parents, and at the end of the bar there’s this guy muttering and insulting people and my parents. My dad then buys a round for everyone remaining, and the guy at the end of the bar asks my dad if he thinks he can buy him off. My dad finally asks what the frick is his problem, and he replies that he is Arab, and today is a glorious day where Allah has risen against the infidels and it’s time for you and your children to pay for your infidelity. Well my dad doesn’t take too kindly (particularly about the children part) to that and gets a few licks on him until he’s pulled off and the Arab is kicked out of the bar.
My parents then go back to their hotel hoping that terrorist supporter wasn’t following them and make it back to their room and turn it onto CNN. First thing they hear: “To Americans abroad, whatever you do, do not get in confrontations with the Arab populations.” My dad said well too late.

Walking through the warehouse at work.
Heard a plane had hit one of the towers.
For some reason thought it may have been a small Cessna.
Little did I know.

I was listening to Walton and Johnson on the radio and someone on the radio said they just got a report that a small plane had hit one of the World Trade Center buildings…..and then a light-hearted comment was made that it must be one of those Kennedy boys taking flying lessons or something to that effect.
I was at work with about six other guys, we were all glued to a small TV that wasn’t supposed to be in the Ops area.
Katrina is the other major external event for me.
Aside: These types of threads smoke out folks who rarely post.

working dealing with a Medicaid Mom who was upset because "it was taking so long". Her kid a fever and back then you had a $5 copay for office visits but none for an ER visit (none of the entitlement people would ever take advantage of that).

Iona, you are a really good person, you add much value here, and I am glad to have been able to have made your virtual acquaintance here.
Happy belated birthday.
If I were desperately hiding in Honduras and the shite had hit the fan, I’d want you on my side.

1st period English Class senior year, pretty sure my head was on the desk when our Librarian ran into the class, then we all ran into the Library and watched the second plane crash on TV, remember it like it was yesterday.

In the military. I was scheduled to separate Dec 2001. Ended up stop-lossed until Dec 2002.

I was teaching 6th grade at Broadmoor Middle. I was in the middle of a class when another teacher who was off at that time came to my room and pulled me outside and told me what happened. After that, everything just stopped. Fortunately I had a TV in my room at that time (on one of those rolling carts) and we were able to turn it on and see what was happening.
