I was living with someone who didn't have cable. Woke up and my friend's wife was going on about planes crashing into the pentagon and more were missing in the air. No friggin clue what was going on. Called my gf and she said she had watched the one tower fall down live. Had to get an oil change at walmart so I just hung out in the electronics department with about 15 other people watching the news.

You know its kinda crazy how things have changed. As I said above, I had an 830 Calc II exam so I got to campus at 7ish and was on the fourth floor of Middelton studying. I had the old Nokia candybar phone which was in my bag on silent. Walked over to Lockett at 8:20 ish into a full classroom. Not a person in there knew anything about it. Britt walks in and tells us class is cancelled. If you've ever had Britt or heard of him, this guy is a sunofabitch, so we all thought he was joking. Then he tells us New York is under attack, and to go find a TV.
I walk out of Lockett and pull out my phone, I've got 10 missed calls. Campus is buzzing because people have heard by now. Call my dad, then call my roommate and one of my best friends. We met up at the Union and spent most of the morning watching CNN in the Union Theater. Theres a picture in the LSU yearbook of the two of us staring at the screen.
No smartphones, no iPads. I didn't have a laptop at the time. If something like this happened today, we'd know about it instantly. Hell, the Boston Marathon bombing broke on the OT before it showed up on CNN, no bullshite.

5th grade homeroom. My teacher always had the TV on in the morning with news, sports, cartoons, etc. for us to watch before the morning announcements, and today she had it tuned to CNN. As I walked in, I looked up and saw the live shot of the North Tower burning, black smoke billowing out like nothing I'd ever seen before. I ran across the hallway to my friend's homeroom to tell him, but they already had the TV on as well. I stood there as the second plane barreled into the South Tower and sent flames and debris cascading out in all directions. It was one of the most memorable moments of my life. My dad's building in Downtown Houston was evacuated and they immediately transported them to their underground backup facility to continue working (Houston was considered a large target because of the energy companies, refining, etc). My mother came to the school and picked my sisters and I up and brought us straight home, where I watched these towers collapse before my eyes on national TV. It is our modern day JFK...our generation's Pearl Harbor...I will always have that day seared into my memory.
Thanks to anyone here who has fought the good fight, past or present. You're the reason these cowards can't sleep at night.

I was at the united States Supreme Court and elsewhere in the Capitol Hill area.
The guards at the Court literally told me "get the frick out of here."
Spent a long time that day figuring out how to get home. Walked a long arse way and ended up taking a bus to my home past the still burning/smoldering pentagon.
It wasn't just everybody going "oh, I wonder if I know anybody there," but people actually thinking they might die next (for a little while).
That week after is a blur. Had some interesting experiences.

I read this each year Iona. Thanks for posting once again. I was in DC about 5 years ago and visited Arlington Cemetary on Christmas Day. You could see the Pentagon in the distance. I can't imagine how terrifying it was for everyone seeing this unfold in your own backyard.

I was driving in my car running an errand in Orlando FL, lived there briefly. I heard it from Howard Stern, I thought it was a joke........I pulled into a Best Buy and walked inside and watched it unfold from there.

Monthly departmental meeting... one of the secretaries ran in saying the country was being attacked. Meeting came to an abrupt halt and turned to watching the TV for the next several hours.

woke up late, saw the headline "America Under Attack" drove to LSU. Picked up my roomates and told them we were at war.
Then we all watched Fox News (it was new and more pleasing to the eye) for the next day or two.

Fishing on the Winnipeg River, heading back to airport and right as my phone got a signal our secretary called and told us a plane had hit one of the towers. We got to the airport and watched the rest on TV including the towers falling. A local TV station interviewed us with our reaction as Americans. All flights shut down so our group rented 3 vans (we were told not to take them out of Canada) and headed to the border. At the border crossing, the US Customs guy must not have known anything because he simply asked "Are you American" and waved us thru. We traded out our vans in Sioux City SD and drove all the way home.
