Know a kid moving to Houston. Where the best area to live for single, young professionals if you have to work near IAH?

Not near IAH- actually no joke.
Depends on how far he wants to commute. The Heights/Montrose/Midtown are great places for young singles but the commute is pretty far (20 miles ~ even though it's a reverse commute).
Most of the northern suburbs (Kingwood, Spring, Cypress, Klein) are family oriented and he might get bored rather quickly out there.

Rice Village if he can afford it. If he is cheap and works downtown, East of Downtown is ridiculously cheap for Houston and isn't nearly as crime ridden as it used to be.

Heights / Washington area. All the young professionals in my organization essentially there or near there. And they commute a further distance than IAH.

Budget? How does he feel about repeated robbery?

If I was working downtown, I'd live downtown

I used to love it when I had clients outside of town when I loved inside. Easy commute.
In other words, perfect opportunity to live inside having to travel against traffic. Midtown, rice, Washington. Somewhere he can hop on the interstate immediately going North, to avoid most traffic.

Lolz no. It's easy in Houston, look west of downtown and within 610. In his case I would say north of 59 as well.

Pretty much this. Anything inside of 610 that is near some bars and isn't obvious ghetto. Past that it is just adjusting for budget and commute.

Most of my late 20s/early 30s friends like the heights area

Heights can be cool, but there is still a bit more crime there than other areas (mainly on the north/east edge). If you take reasonable precautions you should be fine though.
