Millennials about to right the ship for the fricking shite-tastic, selfish, frickshow generations who left us with a goddamn disaster.............while now blaming US for their shortcomings.
Its ok though. We'll take care of your sorry asses. Set you out on a damn glacier.

When that same person is 35 and now married with kids those things that mattered the most in their 20s are no longer that important. Now they're wanting to live in a nice area that's safe, still convinent for their lifestyle, and has good schools. At this stage in their life friends are not as important as their spouse and children.

This tells me only part of the story. I need a comparison to what the same age group was doing 20 years ago. Things I have read show more 20 somethings are living in the cities now than 20 years ago and from personal observation this is true. My inner city hood in Dallas is exploding with apartment and townhouse building.

no, i understand the logic.
however, suburbs breed depravity and mediocrity. many people don't want that for their children.

What is surprising about this? It's a cycle that millions of people go through
1. Live in city while in college
2. Stay in city with plenty of activities as a young adult just starting career
3. Get married
4. Begin planning for family, realize suburbs are more economical.
5. Raise kids in suburbs
6. Die

yup
You stay too long in the city, and the next group of kids look at you, and treat you like a perv.

The oldest millennials are now approaching 40. Born in 1980 or later.
Probably time to get out of mom's basement and buy a place.

The suburbs no more breeds depravity and mediocrity than the inner city breeds exceptionalism and nobility. Those things are determined by how you raise them.

"Inner city" implies ghetto. That's not what I'm talking about.
Go to any university and the difference between the kids raised in the city vs the suburbs is astounding.

You have a grossly oversimplified and jaundiced view of the world.

He's right though. Setting is only one aspect of it. More important to development is the influence of the parents, not the setting.

The recent explosion in Birmingham is a good example of all of this

You're exactly right. Of course a kid's surroundings will have an influence on their development. But the biggest determining factor is what goes on in their home, not the neighborhood around their home.
Some brilliant kids come from the country, burbs, and urban areas, including inner city areas. And likewise some kids from each area come out dumb as a sack of hammers.

5 percent higher in metro areas where median home prices were 20 percent below the national median. The idea was if millennials could afford to purchase a home, they would, and did so in low-cost markets like Birmingham, Detroit, Minneapolis and St. Louis.
Doesn't surprise me one bit. Across the board, salaries in these cities are probably comparable to "destination" cities. These cities, while maybe not quite as much, still offer many attractions for younger people. My oldest son is a prime example. He had offers in Austin and Ft. Worth. Salaries were comparable. He wisely picked Ft. Worth.
For example, why sink $350,000+ in a 1,100 square foot 2bd/2bath townhouse to live in Austin when for the same amount you can buy a 3,000 square foot 4bd/3bath house in Ft. Worth? While not as much as Austin, Ft. Worth offers many bars, restaurants, concerts, and festivals as well.
