Tbh, I wouldnt live in Austin if it was free. The traffic and over crowding of people makes living there a bitch.
The outskirts are great. Living close to downtown was fun at first but it got old quick as its extremely overcrowded and I-35 is a perpetual parking lot. I moved to Cedar Park and am much happier living up here. It's quieter and having to occasionally take 183 or Mopac when heading downtown beats risking my life on I-35.

Austin lost its charm by the 2000s

not having a legit east-west freeway was poor planning

I’d say Midland/Odessa. Cost of living is really high believe it or not. Economy is boom or bust with oil/gas. Most people making the most money commute in (fly in every week) and don’t live there so the money doesn’t really get dumped back into the communities. Desolate land, windy, dusty, and dry. Outside of that probably Loredo or Brownsville but at least you don’t have to spend a fortune to live there. With all that said, still better than anywhere in Louisiana.

so you’ve watched Landman, cool.

Is there a minimum on population? If not, it’s probably some small town in West Texas.

You’ll see Laredo and the Valley cities on here, but they are at least cheap in terms of cost of living. I’d vote Amarillo. You’re far from anything except Lubbock. It’ll get hot, windy, snowy, and risk of tornadoes.

I personally like that area, there are some desolate places in north and west Texas

i learned about vidor after sitting in a mcdonald's by a traffic light during rush hour. first i noticed that there was not a single black employee in Mcdonald's. then i realized that despite the traffic jam of blue collar workers, not a single truck held a black person. once my curiosity was piqued, i started watching more closely. I saw not one single black person in the 30 minutes i was there. substantially different from my experience here in badon rouuugge

It’s funny, the ones complaining about poverty and crime coming from Louisiana…the Valley is probably safer. The illegals you encounter there aren’t running around with knives out. They’re probably chillin at some bus stop. My biggest complaint about the Valley is that’s is hot.

In 1973 I joined the Navy and was sent to Beeville. See the world, my arse! After a year of begging, pleading, threatening (almost) I was allowed to transfer out.
Side note, the Base in Beeville is a prison now and the town has grown considerably since then so it might be a little better.

Homestead Meadows. Outskirts of El Paso with no zoning whatsoever. People live in everything from shipping containers to old vans, and lots of “neighborhoods” have dirt roads. Feels like you’re in Afghanistan
