Al Jazeera is a good source except when the news involves Israel.

The Times of Israel is a good source. They post pro-Israeli stuff, but it is counterbalanced by liberal journalists on their payroll.

Depends on the topic. Economic news - this guy. Political knew that guy. There is no specific network, newspaper, magazine etc to trust.

I think highly informed people listen to podcasts and read certain substacks etc.

Not a good source at all. Their reporting on the Rittenhouse trial was so bad. You could tell they weren't even watching the trial.

I hear Walmart is having a sale on cargo shorts. Maybe your efforts should be focused on that.

For most posters here that’s somewhere on the right, so the perception is that stuff from CNN, NPR, MSNBC etc is left as left can be.

People like to exaggerate things for emphasis. Whether intentionally or not I don’t know but there’s lots of “far right” or “far left” thrown out by different groups

Even outside politics, how often do you see people using best or worst ever or most underrated or overrated. Very little middle of the road things. Maybe it’s for emphasis or it’s easier to group things in extremes or black/white

I don't think unbiased or unslanted news exists any longer.

I 100% agree and honestly, I don't think there is one even close to that standard.

Bill O'Reilly on YouTube. I don't always agree with him but he has never reported dishonest information that I know of and I've followed his reporting since the 2000 Election.

I try to read as much as I can and take an average of everything

We badly need media to get back to the basics, but I’m afraid there’s no putting in that toothpaste back in the tube

I generally listen to just about any news story from any source and base my judgement on my life's experiences. I fully expect all of them to be biased and to have an agenda, they are for profit organizations so they have make hay when the sun shines. The problem is people will only listen or read things that bolster their world view. Its even worse with the internet feeding us what we like to eat. I recognized this was a problem when newspapers started disappearing. When people paid for a newspaper 2 things happen. They read it cover to cover because they paid for it and every once in a while, no matter the agenda of the paper, and they were as bad as FOX or CNN for pushing an agenda. you'd be exposed to something which conflicted with your world view but you paid for it, dammit, you were going to read it. It might not change your mind, but you were exposed....that doesn't happen today.

I go out of my way to hear and read things from sources I know will not feed my worldview because I know a couple of things....I don't know everything and no one else does either. we only hear and read what we want to hear and read. We also have at least one if not two generations now of Americans who do not have the breadth of life experience needed to judge information who have not been spoon fed their world view with no information to the contrary. Thats a problem. I hear people making all manner of ill advised political comments all the time....both sides....and I always remind myself that I want to make for damn certain that I do it as seldom as possible because I think it is important to consider the fact that I might be wrong LOL. It is really that simple.

I will say this. I have been very fortunate in that I have been able to live and work among a broader scope of people and places than most people enjoy. That has been a major reason I do not think I am always right and anyone who disagrees with me is always wrong. I also read....a lot. A lot of shite that conflicts with my world view. It does not change my mind but it does alter my thinking. For years I listened to conservative talk radio for the very reason that I did not agree with it at all....I was in my early 20s when this started but I grew up listening to it with my father. I did, however, come to realize that many things that I dismissed out of hand initially eventually, when considered beyond the bombastic delivery used. made a lot of damn sense. I still would disagree with about 90% of it but I would consider it and occasionally I would come to realize I was wrong. People go out of their way to avoid that sort of discomfort.

Just look at the responses in this thread. People openly admitting they get their news from opinion or biased sources. Then making fun of people who actually make an effort to read unbiased sources.

The world has turned to shite.

It does not but I am not sure it ever did, not in the way we would like to think it did. The difference then and now is then you'd often read or hear something that was not supportive of your world view. You have to go out of your way now to experience that....it is far easier to just soak up the confirmation that they are all to eager to send your way. Its not the industry, its the individual consumer.

There is a message board on this website where you can go, right now, and within 30 seconds find some of the most insane and batshit crazy statements the world can provide. I sincerely think that most of those people are mostly full of shite BUT some of them actually believe that shite....and that is something they are choosing to do unless they are mentally ill. It would be akin to a 30 year old person swearing on their mothers life that they saw Santa Clause last week and he is real. That idiot is choosing to be insane. Get a bunch of people who actually believe that paired up with a bunch of people who know better but pretend because it is shocking and allows them to fit in and all of sudden you have what would normally be called a cult. It ain't good to refuse to be exposed to differing opinions, but it is realy easy

If you can stomach watching any news on TV very little of itis news, its opinion, and you'd think that there was nothing else happening in the world other than politicians saying this or that. They all cover exactly the same shite from whatever angle they push. It used to be that TV news was 30 minutes of local news followed up by 30 minutes of national and world news. That was it, There was a 30 minute spot at night after prime time shows were done but there was basically an hour a day, if you wanted it. About half the local news was sports and weather so it wasn't actually "news" and at least some of it was fluff pieces and human interest. For actual news it was probably 15 minutes if that. The national news also had some of this, so maybe 25 minutes there. Both had some commercials so lets say 12 and 32 minutes of actual news...for a combined 44 minutes out of 24 hours. Americans were FAR better informed then than we are now. CNN and FOX and MSNBC still only deliver about a half an hour of actual news a day and 23.5 hours of people you would not let in the front door opining about that half hour. None of them do any journalism....they read newspapers. They seriously, at least half the time, will say something along the lines of "The Wall Street Journal is reporting........". I can read the wall street journal without some senator I wouldn't help change a tire telling me what his thinking on the subject is. And it is always the exact same story from a different angle. How is this even possible???

It's fed to everyone constantly by politicians and their pundits and so many people now flock together on the internet with people who share their biases parroting that stuff over and over.

If you go to the political board here, Biden is an extreme socialist etc

If you talk anyone on the real far left he's a centrist establishment corporate capitalist that can be pushed slightly toward liberal social issues if it's not bad for his cronies' bottom lines.

One major consideration that flies under the radar is what news outlets choose to omit. You can get a pretty straightforward report of an event in terms of language or inflection but if a key aspect of that event is deliberately omitted it is still biased, despite the appearance otherwise.

The future, in my opinion, is with subscription news services. Those who profit from subscriber based revenue streams.

The mainstream media makes money from advertisers and like it or not, they are beholden to them. Look at the Covid Vax! None covered any stories that were negative. They were afraid of loosing their largest advertisers.
