The Joplin tornado was one of worst in u.s history. I live an hour away and I remember looking towards Missouri and seeing how dark the clouds were.

A really high number of deaths compared to other tornados like Moore and Tuscaloosa.
I just happened to be eating at a restaurant across from the Pizza Hut in Joplin (now rebuilt) where several died when I came across this thread.

SW MO / Joplin seem to get nailed pretty hard too
Had a ton of small tornadoes since I've been here. Had one kill 3 people near Joplin awhile back.
Had a coworker who's husband and son were injured when their barn collapsed on them during one last spring.

I heard stories that the tornado ripped off the roof of a Wal-Mart supercenter.F5 tornados are rare and it took Joplin 2-3 years of rebuilding before it started looking normal again.

You can still tell its path. No trees and plenty of empty lots.

I never realized that Alabama was a tornado state until I lived in Montgomery for ten years. It's not fun when the sirens start blasting in the middle of the night. People over there were shocked when I told them that Baton Rouge and New Orleans didn't have tornado sirens. I was living in Montgomery when a tornado hit that city. Most of the damage happened at a mobile home park called Sunshine Village. I've always wondered why tornadoes always seem to target mobile homes. BTW, I was in awe when I saw all of the mobile home parks in the city of Auburn. The university has quite a few on the borders of the campus.

I grew up in Gulfport, not really many tornadoes there but the Hattiesburg, Tupelo, and Meridian areas seem to be tornado magnets.

Mobile homes are not insulated very good and has many areas that air can escape. Because of this, it is easier for the wind to grab and are easily flipped or thrown.
It is said you are safer in a car than a mobile home.

Odd that Baton Rouge and New Orleans don’t get as frequent tornadoes as just a little north around McComb and Jackson, MS. Not sure why?

The heat from engine exhaust stalled on the I-10 Bridge creates a local high pressure that pushes tornados north.

Texas is just bigger. The greatest density of tornados is northern Alabama.
I don't think so. I think Bama has the reputation of having fewer tornadoes BUT much stronger ones on average. EF4 and EF5's are more likely to develop there.
Texas/OK/Neb/KS get overall more tornadoes, with the majority being weaker.

Florida has a lot due to spinoffs from TS and hurricanes.

I feel like Florida is the only surprise on that list.
I wonder how many are formed during hurricanes

A tornado touches down in Dallas last fall. A large chunk of Dallas was w/o power for several days b/c of it.

I figured that but OP could have been born there or moved from Texas.
