The Smokies are famous for Photinus carolinus the ones that flash in a synchronized fashion. Most of the populations of this species follow the Appalachian Mtn chain where they exist in pockets. There is a lottery every to access Elkmont to see them at peak.
Congaree NP in SC has a different species that also flashes in a synchronized pattern.

Like Legend said its multifactorial if fire-ants were a ravenous as you say why would anyone in SE LA ever see another beetle again.

I never said it wasn't multi-factor - go back to my original post.

WRT to beetles, in this very thread, we've had discussion of insect mass extinctions and I pointed out that you can easily observe spider population falling with fire ants present. Fire ants overwhelm everything around them.

There were NO fire ants in Alabama from Auburn all the way to Tennessee as late as the mid-1990's

Same for Texas. I remember my first encounter with fire ants. I worked offshore drilling and tore my ACL in 1997. Since I couldn't work for awhile, I went back home to the dairy in central Texas so I could work doing some things. I was sitting on the ground welding and BAM! WTF? Fire ants were all over me. Prior to that all we had were those big red ants and you could spot them 50 feet away.

There is pretty good evidence that we are currently in the midst of a mass extinction event in regards to insects.

Got a bunch in my back yard every night now in VA. Love having them back since I moved. I hadn’t seen them for years in LA.

Light pollution. I have seen fireflies in BR when i cut my lights during the termite swarms.

I certainly see them in the woods when hunting.

Remember the trucks that rolled around your neighborhood spraying for mosquitoes? Turns out that spray didn’t discriminate.

It also didn’t kill mosquitoes
