I'm looking to buy a few sugar cane sticks. Does anyone know where I can buy these? I'm in Baton Rouge but willing to travel an hour or so.

Good day.

Can you get in trouble for that? I’ve done it but always felt sketchy

Idk I just go to the land we lease to a sugar cane farmer. Not like he’s gonna tell me anything

I was going to say the same thing. Did it all the time when I was a kid.

If you don't want to get shot or arrested, try the fruit stand in Port Allen. They used to sell them. On the right side of Highway 415 if you are headed towards 190 from Baton Rouge.

you might also try a hispanic or asian grocery store. They often have sugar cane.

We aren't talking crab traps here!

I wouldn't think it's an issue. I wouldn't drive deep onto someone's property, but cutting a stalk of cane isn't that big of a deal. I grew up around cane farms and my grandparents have a farm, so I guess I just never thought of it as trespassing though. Even if it is a problem, it's not going to be a shotgun in your face type of problem.

Chances are you'll see some of the farmers in those areas across the river. I bet if you ask them if it's okay to cut a few stalks for your kid, they'd let you.

Drive into a cane field in Port Allen and you'll probably catch someone having sex or getting high.

My cousin who is around the same age as me lived on my grandparents farm (his dad now runs it). They had a two story house. When I'd sleep over in like middle school he'd always say we need to look out the upstairs window overlooking the fields. Some nights he could see headlights way back in the field from teenagers banging back there, haha.

Most of the cane grown now in the fields is not good for chewing cane at all. I looked for several years for some good old fashioned purple cane so I could grow it. My goal is to grow enough to make cane syrup for my personal use. Anyway, you need to find some old fashioned cane and not the crap they are growing now.

Guy I went to high school was found in about 6 pieces in a West Baton Rouge cane field.

And for cane, it’s a bit early. And if you don’t go cut it normally all the farmers markets have it later in the fall.

exactly....

buy sugar cane stalks?

as long as you don't go chop down 1/2 acre of cane, i'm pretty sure you'll be fine just grabbing a few stalks from someone's field....
